#FreeJessica? Britney Spears Fans Are Now Exposing Jessica Simpson's Troubled Legacy

Jessica's overbearing father and mistreatment by the media haven't aged well in the #FreeBritney era.

Gimme more! Now that fans made some major progress on the #FreeBritney front, some of them are looking at how other female artists of the '00s fought similar struggles. #JusticeForJessica, anyone?

She's much 'free'-er than Britney Spears (no conservatorship drama here) but Jessica Simpson has a pop cultural past that people are only now starting to reckon with. Here's what they're all talking about.

The Media Did Her Dirty

Just like the relentless media scrutiny detailed in the 'Framing Britney Spears' documentary, media attention Jessica got in the early '00s did not age well.

This Tweet from NY Magazine writer Rachel Handler started circulating this week, accumulating more than 15,000 likes. It quotes an interview Jessica Simpson gave in 2009:

In it, the journalist writes about Jessica's weight ("fat") as her defining feature, something that modern day readers find shockingly inappropriate.

Some replied with Tweets about how at that time, "being a female celebrity was a f*****g curse." Others had nothing but love for past Jessica.

"I always felt empathy for her because I felt she was a whole lot deeper than what was being presented (thanks to the media and her handlers coughherdadcough)," responded one fan. More on that dad issue right now!

Jessica Had an Overbearing Father

Similarities in Jessica and Britney's stories start early. They were both child stars who broke into pop music with the help of the fathers who managed them - and just as Jamie Spears made problematic choices on Britney's behalf, so did Joe Simpson for Jessica.

His most uncomfortable 'dadager' moment came when he described Jessica's appeal to a media outlet back in 2006.

"Jessica never tries to be sexy. She just is sexy. If you put her in a T-shirt or you put her in a bustier, she's sexy in both," he told GQ. "She's got double D's! You can't cover those suckers up!"

Joe's attitude about Jessica's body seems especially inappropriate since the singer has come out as a survivor of childhood abuse at the hands of a family friend. Despite widespread criticism of Joe's comments, he continued to manage Jessica until his recent retirement.

Male Singers Profited from Jessica's Pain

In the autobiography Jessica released last year, she explains some unsavory experiences she had with Nick Lachey, John Mayer, and (surprise, surprise) Justin Timberlake.

From John Mayer telling Playboy about sleeping with her to Justin Timberlake kissing her and immediately texting his friends about it, men in music gained clout for their connection to the pop star while SHE suffered from a promiscuous reputation. Sound familiar?

In Jessica's book she's said Nick Lachey was the worst, using false stories about their marriage to sell an album of breakup songs. (You can hear more of her side of that story in this podcast about her autobiography.)

Jessica's objectification by men and the media have been largely ignored until just now. Will she ever get the kind of justice we're finally seeing for Britney? Let's hope her fans keep up the fight!
