Fans have been calling for a remake of Game of Thrones season 8 ever since it aired in 2019. The disastrous conclusion to the series was slammed by the cast as well as writer-creator George RR Martin, who has now revealed his one regret about the series.

Martin Regrets Leaving The Series Unfinished

While series writers-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss had plenty of source material to adapt from during the early seasons of Game Of Thrones, the same cannot be said for its ending.

The television series was created when Martin had completed four books (and just published a fifth) in his seven-part A Song of Ice and Fire series of novels. The adaptation was pitched under the assumption that Martin would complete the novels before the HBO series would catch up to him. Obviously, that didn't happen.

Martin, who has been dubbed as a "procrastinator" by fans has pointed out he regrets letting the series surpass the books.

The author stated his "biggest issue", saying: "Looking back, I wish I'd stayed ahead of the books. When they [HBO] began that series, I had four books already in print, and the fifth one came out just as the series was starting in 2011."

Martin had a five-book head start and never thought the studio would catch up with him considering the amount of material each book included. "These are gigantic books, as you know" said the writer.

He further added: "They caught up with me and passed me and, you know, that made it a little strange—because now, the show was ahead of me and the show was going in somewhat different directions."

Along with a few changes included, HBO's Game of Thrones faithfully adapted the events of A Song of Ice and Fire until the season five finale. Although Martin had shared his synopsis for the remaining books with Benioff and Weiss, they were pretty much on their own from thereon.

From Cersei Lannister's bombing of the Sept to Jon and Sansa's reunion, David and Dan gave fans some of the most incredible scenes to remember the series by...but it wasn't enough. While George RR Martin has promised fans his story will have a different (and hopefully, less traumatizing) ending in the books, the author is still writing The Winds Of Winter, the sixth book in the series.

It is expected to be followed by A Dream of Spring, the final book in the saga...but considering Martin has been tied up with the franchise's spin-off shows, there's no telling if those two books will ever see the light of day.
