Performers on the big and small screen come from all walks of life, and no journey to the top is the same. These folks from all backgrounds come together to make a movie or a show come to be, which can lead to tension on set.

As one of the biggest actors of all time, Gene Hackman has seen and done it all, earning tons of praise and a huge net worth. Hackman is a true talent, but when he linked up with Wes Anderson for a film, the actor proved to be difficult to work with.

Let's take a look and see what it was like when Wes Anderson linked up with Gene Hackman for The Royal Tenenbaums.

Gene Hackman Is An Acting Legend

When looking at some of the biggest actors in history, it is important to take a long look at the work that Gene Hackman put together during his years in Hollywood. He is retired from performing these days, but when he was in his prime, Hackman was delivering the goods while turning himself into a legend of the business.

The two-time Oscar winner spent decades in the entertainment industry turning in great performances and inspiring younger actors to pursue their dreams of being a major movie star. A look through Hackman's career work dating back to the 60s will reveal a number of incredible and diverse pictures that allowed the performer to showcase his range and his ability to improve any project that he was in.

Thanks to his greatness on screen, he was consistently up for huge roles, though he did miss out on some notable projects, including Apocalypse Now, The Fugitive, Jaws, JFK, Misery, Rocky, and Pearl Harbor.

During the 2000s, Hackman would accept the chance to star in a Wes Anderson film that has a lot of love from fans.

He Appeared In 'The Royal Tenenbaums'

In 2001, The Royal Tenenbaums was looking to make a splash with audiences upon its release. The film boasted Wes Anderson as its director, and as if that wasn't impressive enough, it also had a ridiculously stacked cast, which included none other than Gene Hackman in a primary role.

Hackman was going to be starring alongside performers like Danny Glover, Anjelica Huston, Bill Murray, Gwyneth Paltrow, and more. Yeah, tons of heavy hitters were working on this movie, which gave it a lot of hype.

Unfortunately, things got off to a rocky start with Hackman.

Earlier this year, Wes Anderson revealed, "I hope this is not indiscreet to say this, but Gene objected to the money on the film."

Hackman was accustomed to making way more than Tenenbaums was going to pay him, and this was a point of contention early on.

Being a professional, Anderson has had nice things to say about Hackman's work on the movie.

"He was one of the things that pulled everybody into this movie. Anytime we are together and talk about the movie we always talk about him," the director said.

As great as this is, the truth of the matter is that Hackman was not exactly a joy to work with while production was underway.

He Was A Nightmare To Work With

Far Out Magazine gave some of the finer details about the situation, writing, "Sinking Wes Anderson’s spirits on set by repeatedly insulting him, there have been multiple reports stating that Hackman called the director a ‘c***’ on the set of the film, with Bill Murray even coming in on his days off to help shield Wes Anderson from the bitter star."

This is an interesting thing to note here, as Bill Murray was the one keeping the peace. Murray has been notoriously difficult to work with throughout his career, so if he is having to intervene, then you know things got ugly.

The site also notes that Hackman clashed with Anjelica Huston, who at least got to slap Hackman during a scene together.

"I hit him a really good one. I saw the imprint of my hand on his cheek and I thought, he’s going to kill me," she revealed.

Clearly, Hackman being involved in the project was not a whole lot of fun for anyone, but eventually, production was able to conclude, and the folks working on the movie were able to keep a healthy distance from the actor.

The Royal Tenenbaums wound up netting over $70 million at the box office while landing some solid reviews, but at the end of the day, bringing the picture to life was a difficult undertaking. At this point, Hackman is retired and even if that ended, we can't imagine him working with Anderson again.
