It's been a little over a year since the 2019 El Paso shooting at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas. The shooting was a racially motivated, specifically targeting Latinos. It resulted in 23 deaths. For many in El Paso, even those who were not there, the experience in was life-changing.

Comedian George Lopez and actor Edward James Olmos recently sat down to talk about the true meaning of #ElPaso strong on IGTV on Saturday. They reminded the country in the midst of the racial tension that has been going on. that positivity and triumph can arise from hate and tragedy, sharing what they witnessed a year ago while consoling families of the victims.

Lopez and Olmos interacted with the first responders and families, and were inspired by their reactions to the tragedy. They both described the reactions of the victims and the victims' families as an exemplary communal act of strength and resilience in a time of tragedy.

Olmos said he was moved to see the community in El Paso flip tragedy into hope. He said, "forgiveness rang true and personified everything that those people stand for. They understood the hatred and they understood why people had to do that kind of thing and that was really the essence of it."

"I think forgiveness, hope, and understanding of giving to each other and helping each other, those families helped each other," he continued. "I didn't hear anyone say why, all I heard was we have to understand this and help each other, we have to hope, we have to inspire, we have to give."

Lopez briefly talked about the current racial tension in America, but said the outpouring of positivity in the aftermath of the shooting was truly inspirational and a story of triumph that flies in the face of all that tension. He described the flowers and messages that were placed in front of the Walmart where the shooting occurred as being filled with nothing but positive messages.

He said, "If this world could be El Paso strong, we will be better people."
