What is it about Greta Gerwig that people love to hate? A shade storm directed at her on Twitter this morning has fans wondering what made the director of 'Little Women' and 'Lady Bird' such a common target.

Is she too millennial? Too quiet? Too private? Here's where the internet stands on Greta right now (and some people's guesses about why).

In a piece that nobody seems to have asked for, a reporter from the San Francisco Chronicle begged Greta not to apply her own artistic treatment to a film based on what happened at the recent Capitol riots.

Thousands of likes and retweets later, people started to question why Greta was being made fun of in the first place:

Fans Struggled to Explain It

Film buffs entered the chat with sarcastic comments about why Greta Gerwig was randomly getting called out when other, bigger directors (cough*Michael Bay*ahem) were already making the kinds of tone deaf choices described in the Chronicle's tweet.

"Michael Bay produced a film about COVID, but sure, let's go off on Greta Gerwig who has only directed two films in her career," wrote Twitter user @Kehenulo.

"Ah yes, blockbuster filmmaker Greta Gerwig, right up there with Michael Bay," joked film critic Chris Evangelista.

Others saw the humor in Greta's random dragging across the internet:

Some Think Sexism is At Play

Many fans thought it was Greta's gender that made her a target for criticism. (She does tend to make women-centered movies, and star in indie flicks with female leads.)

"This is what happens when you don't watch any films by women and just pick the name of a random one off the top of your head," suggested Twitter user Brandon Carbaugh.

Some fans claimed the Chronicle writer who started the hate fest should be criticized himself:

"Tony Bravo definitely would have been one of the male Academy voters who didn't bother to screen Little Women because 'it seemed like a girl movie,'" ventured one fan, while another added "@TonyBravoSF owes Greta an apology, but since he broadcasts his mystifying sexism, I won't hold my breath."

Greta's unlucky trending day ultimately turned into a debate over whether men dislike her disproportionately. Maybe it's just a Greta problem?
