Singer Halsey’s absence from the Met Gala left fans beyond disappointed.

Ashley Frangipane, otherwise known as Halsey, left fans feeling gutted as they skipped out on the biggest fashion event of the year. Despite currently residing in New York where the Met Gala was hosted, Halsey was a no-show and fans were desperate to know why.

Rushing to Twitter to reach out to the singer, one fan wrote, “ Halsey why aren’t u at the met gala.”

Later, Halsey revealed that her absence was due to motherly duties. They wrote, “I’m still breastfeeding. I only had my baby 7 weeks ago. There’s nothing more “American fashion” than moms having to go back to work after just giving birth lol.”

Some fans were not happy with the answer as they felt it came from a “certain level of privilege”. For example, one wrote, “I understand what they are trying to say but being asked to the met gala =/= [does not equal] being forced to clock in WEEKS (if that) after giving birth just to make ends meets. There was a better way to word this is all.”

Whilst another agreed, adding: “i... they're not wrong. honestly the wording of h's tweet didn't sit right with me. i just don't see going to a big rich people party as "work", certainly not compared to what working class Americans have to do. i think she recognizes that now but her tweet was kinda…”

Halsey was quick to hit back at the scorned fans. Whilst acknowledging their position of privilege, Halsey also reminded fans that the biological demands that come after having a baby were “still prevalent”. Thus, rounded their defense off with “the biology does not excuse me.”

As many rushed to their defense, Halsey continued to explain themself. They even outlined details of their postpartum journey as they attempted to reach somewhat of an understanding with their fans. They wrote, “Idk I got leaky hurty boobs, a bloody swollen uterus, and a human being that depends on me as a life force. I recognize my privilege every single day and the time it affords me with my baby. but like it or not my body is gonna do what it wants. I’m doing my best to juggle it all!”

Many fans continued to show their support for the singer. They flooded Halsey’s Twitter, letting them know that there had been no need to explain themself. Fans also acknowledged the mentally and physically straining time which Halsey must have been going through.

However, others were still not fully convinced, arguing that their absence from the Met Gala wasn’t the cause of their anger but rather their disregard for the working class. One fan wrote, “bruh nobody is mad at you for not showing up to the met gala obviously ur not gonna do big events with a baby but "going back to work" looks very different for most people.”

As Halsey rounded off the debate, they expressed to fans that their intention had not been to undermine the lives and struggles of many working moms. They expressed their gratitude for their privilege as they wrote, “I am so grateful. For my baby after everything I went through to get pregnant. For my undeserved comfort to spend time home. For the blessing to make art as a form of employment. But postpartum does not discriminate. That’s all I meant to say.”
