Hermione Granger is beloved by millions of Harry Potter fans worldwide, and for good reason. She is intelligent, brave and her loyalty to her friends is unquestionable... Well, most of the time. Let’s face it, sometimes her actions and usual character traits just don’t add up.
She's known to be a stickler for the rules, but she has no problems breaking the school rules when it suits her. She’s proud of being something of a social justice warrior, however, she’s not capable of showing respect or consideration for those who disagree with her views.
There's no doubt that she's a complex character, and she definitely has her share of flaws. Let's take a closer look at some disturbing facts about Hermione that really highlight her shortcomings.
25 She Was Made Curvier In The IMAX Poster
The IMAX poster for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix drew criticism for how it depicted Emma Watson. Compared to the other movie posters, Watson's bust had been enlarged - despite the fact that Hermione is supposed to be fifteen years old during the events of the movie. Hermione's waist was also made slimmer and her hair was lightened to make it seem blonde.
24 What Would The Mirror Of Erised Show?
J.K. Rowling was once asked what Hermione would see in the Mirror of Erised. J.K. Rowling's response was that Hermione would see herself, Harry, and Ron alive and well following the defeat of Voldemort. But it didn't end there. Hermione would also see herself entwined in a loving embrace with Ron.
23 Party Girl
In 2011, Emma and her co-stars from Harry Potter partied up a storm in London to drown their sorrows with dancing and fun as their childhood days with the popular franchise were over. The partying did cheer them up and Emma still hasn't given up her partying ways. Watson wishes to keep it secret, but the paps keep catching her in the act and eyewitnesses always spill the beans.
22 Harry And Hermione Were Moments Away From Becoming Lovers
Following the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, all the romantic relationships of the series were finally resolved. The Harry and Hermione fans weren't happy with the last book - even though a Hermione/Ron relationship had been heavily hinted since Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. J.K. Rowling confirmed that there were certain "charged moments" where things could have gone a different way.
21 A Dark Scene
Bellatrix uses her knife to cut the word "Mudblood" into Hermione's arm. The idea for this scene was actually thought up by Emma Watson and Helena Bonham Carter. It doesn't really really fit with Bellatrix's usual style - she is the kind of person who would prefer to use the pain inflicted by magic rather than using a Muggle weapon - but it is kinda dark and twisted.
20 Permanently Scars Marietta
Dumbledore’s Army, the secret group formed by Hermione, Harry, and Ron, was compromised when Marietta told Umbridge about the meetings. However, the parchment she and the other members of the D.A. had signed at the first meeting was jinxed, making anyone who betrayed the organization break out in pimples that spelled the word "SNEAK" across their face. Perhaps if Hermione had mentioned the curse, this would have discouraged snitching?!
19 Kidnapping Rita Skeeter
We can all agree that Rita was an absolutely horrible person and journalist, who had published defamatory material about Hermione, Harry, and Hagrid during the Triwizard Tournament. Trapping her in a jar for about a week, however, was very unbecoming and definitely highlighted Hermione's vengeful dark side - even if Rita was an unregistered Animagus.
18 Wiped Her Parents' Memories
Let’s not forget how she erased her parents' memories after they visited the wizarding world. Alright, so she did actually restore their memories after the wizarding war was over. Some might argue that this was, in reality, a selfless act - right as that may be, you gotta agree it was extreme.
17 She's Ruthless And Will Break Rules
When she wants something done, she’s ruthless. Like how she confounded McLaggen just before his Quidditch trials, just so that Ron would win. It was against the rules but that didn't stop her. The world is black and white to Hermione. Also, let's not forget how she attacked Ron with birds out of jealousy and got away with it.
16 She's Stubborn
In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Hermione was hell-bent on freeing the elves despite an indication from some of the elves that they didn't want to be set free. While she is kind and cannot stand injustice, she didn't go about solving this in the right way. She has to learn to listen to others.
15 She Hates Being Outdone
When she feels outdone, Hermione gets angry and can be rather offensive. For example, seeing as she always wants to be the best at everything, she didn't respond well to Harry outperforming her in sixth-year Potions. She accused him of cheating because he got better grades than her when in fact, he never did such a thing.
14 Little Miss Know It All
Miss Granger might be well versed in a lot of topics. However, sometimes she does come off as an insufferable know it all who always thinks she is right and has a habit of shoving her opinions down people's throats. She often makes decisions that affect those around her without consulting them first.
13 She's Not Innovative
Hermione seems to lack the ability to be innovative when it comes to creating new magic or improve on an existing one. Not a good trait for a wizard. This is perhaps particularly obvious when you start comparing her to Snape, who had all his inventions and improvements written in his old textbook.
12 Jealous And Envious
Fleur Delacour is extremely beautiful, possesses some powerful magic, and had Harry and Ron’s attention - much to Hermione’s displeasure. Granted she was aloof and abrasive at times, but she was never rude to Hermione. Hermione bashed Fleur for being pretty and having guys drool over her, and even went as far as shrinking her own teeth because she was so insecure regarding her own appearance.
11 She Isn’t Open To Other People’s Ideas
In one movie, she completely dismisses Luna’s ideas of magical creatures and she even goes as far as calling them illogical. She then takes it a step further by mercilessly mocking Luna and calling her a loony. Hermione will dismiss anything in a heartbeat if she doesn’t know or can’t comprehend it.
10 She's Manipulative
She had a crush on Ron but went on a date with a guy he hates, that's just outright manipulation and rather passive-aggressive. It didn't end there though. She then made sure Ron heard about it. She's constantly trying to one-up Ron - at the cost of their friendship. She cannot stand coming in second place in anything and will go to extremes to avoid that.
9 Bossy And Never Apologises for Her Mistakes
Hermione can be rather bossy at times and often belittled Ron. She never apologized to Ron for the bird attack, or how she refuses to get Crookshanks under control and insists on Ron leaving Scabbers in the dorm. We later learn that Scabbers isn’t the terrified rodent we thought he was but still, Hermione didn’t know that at the time.
8 She Fears Failing And Being Inferior
In 'Chamber of Secrets' and 'Prisoner of Azkaban', we learn that Hermione deeply fears “failing” and getting kicked out of Hogwarts. This is made worse by Malfoy’s claims of her inferiority for being a “Mudblood.” Hermione then copes with this fear, and her insecurities, by bottling up her emotions, which we see come to a head in Goblet of Fire and Deathly Hallows
7 Lacks A Sense Of humor
Hermione is very easily angered regarding her studies. Her desire to always be the best at everything makes her seem stiff and she comes off as too serious. In fact, she has such a severe strain on her sense of humor to the point she has none. We can't recall many times where she laughed out of humor, as opposed to sarcastic bitterness.
6 Lacks Objectivity
Harry suspected Draco of being a Death Eater. Draco even admits being a Death Eater and Hermione still denies it. Despite Harry overhearing an incriminating conversation between Draco and Snape she still refuses to believe it. Instead, she's stating that Draco is just a stupid little boy and Snape is just acting. It is difficult for her to admit that anyone else could be right.
5 She Lacks Instinct
Hermione's instinct is nearly always wrong. She doesn't accept the Malfoy is a Death Eater theory. The only time she was in charge of Deathly Hallows, it led to the destruction of the Phoenix wand. She doesn't accept the Hallow theory even when the evidence was right in front of her.
4 She Goes Behind People's Backs
In The Prisoner of Azkaban, Hermione reports Harry's Firebolt to McGonagall without even telling Harry or Ron of her suspicions and fears. She was right - the broomstick was indeed from Sirius Black - but she alienated her best friends. She went behind their backs, talking to a teacher because she knew that Harry would be unable to refuse Professor McGonagall if she asked for the broomstick. Good intentions, messy execution.
3 She Can't Make Friends
Hermione does not know how to make friends. She had no known friends before Harry and Ron, and her friends are all people she's met through Ron. Even after developing a friendship with Harry, she and Harry could not get along without Ron, as seen during times of various conflicts with Ron.
2 A Fear Of Anything She Doesn't Understand
Hermione has a fear of pretty much anything she doesn’t know, and everything she fails to comprehend. Some of her most bitter actions, as well as the insecurity that she carries around, all originate from her non-acceptance of anyone or anything that can’t be placed in her tiny box of reasoning.
1 She's Not Any Good In Situations That Need Immediate Action
Hermione's brain seems to shut down when a situation requires her to act immediately. For instance, when she was trying to rescue Harry and Ron from the Devil’s Snare, she forgot her ability to conjure a flame and tried to find wood instead. In later adventures, Harry is always the first one to react to the situations they find themselves in.
