“I didn’t believe that my substance use warranted the intervention, but I’m glad it happened because it briefly took me away from the world that was making me unhappy, and allowed me to get some clarity,” Felton writes. “Any time one of us disturbed a take, we were given a red card," he explains “A red card meant you had to put £10 into a bag and, at the end of the shoot, all the money was donated to charity. It was a good plan to keep us on the straight and narrow, but it didn’t always work.”

Tom Felton shares that Alan Rickman (who played Professor Snape) always spoke to child visitors in full character, much to their delight.

While Tom had a great admiration for Rickman, he also shares an anecdote about the late actor’s temperamental side while filming Half-Blood Prince. Rickman had a long cape that billowed behind him as a group of Death Eaters were supposed to be following him in the scene. Before the take, he turned to the other actors in the scene and menacingly threatened, “Don’t step on my f**king cloak.”

When Felton accidentally stepped on the cloak, he declared “I’m not f**king doing this again!” At the time he thought he was serious, but later realized it was the late actor's "brilliantly dry sense of humor” and was embracing his role.

Felton often talks about Rickman's kindness. For example, he insisted Felton get the same kind of director’s chair that the adult actors on the set had.

“It was a small thing,” Felton writes. “But I’ll never forget that moment of kindness. Alan wanted a younger cast member to be treated like an equal to these leading lights. He didn’t have to do it, but the fact that he did spoke volumes about the man he was.”
