Many times has the question been asked, "Who would win in a fight: Voldemort or Darth Vader?" While we can agree that Star Wars' Darth Vader enjoyed a lot more success than Harry Potter's Voldemort, the latter villain still hails from a world filled with deep and sometimes dark magic. That's why the question is such a toughie, since J.K. Rowling's vibrant world building has left us with so many powerful types of magic and spell work that even today we're still learning more about it in the world of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

A better question, of course, would pit Vader against Dumbledore, but even Dumbledore had his limitations, as we've witnessed in both the films and the books. There are powerful forms of magic seen the Wizarding War but never in the classroom. Some make perfect sense for Hogwarts teachers to avoid; teaching dark magic would be irresponsible. But others powers really should have been used or taught in class to better prepare the students for their fight against Voldemort. Here are Harry Potter: 20 Wild Superpowers Hogwarts Wizards Have But Have Never Used.

20 Legilimency

The ability to pry into another wizard's mind and read it isn't a natural born talent for most witches and wizards, but it's a very helpful skill that dark wizards often employ to carry out their plots. It would make a lot of sense for the subject to be taught in N.E.W.T.-level Defense Against the Dark Arts to help future Aurors gain information from suspects, but it might be too intense for students who aren't pursuing this career.

19 Flight

Wizards and witches can fly? According to Severus Snape and the Death Eaters they can. So why don't any other witches or wizards fly as well? Fans have joked about enchanting underwear to make it possible but the fact remains that it's not taught at Hogwarts and we only see evil characters do it.

18 Alchemy

Courtesy of The Leaky Cauldron

Technically, alchemy is a subject in the Harry Potter universe, but we never see it actually taught in class. Sixth and seventh-year students are allowed to take the elective, which involves the transmutation of substances, like metal into gold. It's a neat skill that would have been interesting to see in the series.

17 The Sight

Sybill Trelawney has only demonstrated being able to deliver prophecies twice in her entire life that Dumbledore knows of, which is why it's weird that she continues to teach at Hogwarts when there are other masters of The Sight who could teach divination to the students at Hogwarts. Aside from Trelawney's ominous warning, we never get to see this superpower used at Hogwarts.

16 Unforgivable Curses

While we technically see Severus Snape and Barty Crouch, Jr., while posing as Alastor Moody, utilize Unforgivable Curses at Hogwarts, actual Hogwarts teachers obviously never use these spells in front of students or teach them to carry them out. These incredibly powerful curses, including the Imperius Curse, Cruciatus Curse, and the Eliminating Curse, do lasting harm and are forbidden to all witches and wizards, which is why we don't see them every day.

15 Elder Wand Powers

Dumbledore is in possession of the Elder Wand, which is one of the most powerful magical objects ever made. It can do things otherwise impossible, like mending broken wands, so we wonder why Dumbledore didn't use it to help Ron out with his wand. He also never used it to break the curse on the Defense Against the Dark Arts position.

14 Arithmancy

courtesy of Screen Rant

Arithmancy is another subject that's technically taught at Hogwarts, but we never witness a teacher using it. The course includes really helpful magic, like inventing spells, so it would be interesting to witness teachers using it. We know that Severus Snape invented spells in the past, but we have never seen the process in action.

13 Occlumency

Courtesy of Screen Rant

The opposite of Legilimency, Occlumency is the wizard ability to block someone else from accessing one's thoughts. Dumbledore instructs Snape to teach Harry this difficult skill, which doesn't make sense since he knows they despise one another, and it's no surprise that Harry doesn't get very good at the skill. But where did Snape learn it in the first place? Why isn't it taught at Hogwarts?

12 Time Travel

Courtesy of The Mary Sue

Hogwarts students are seen utilizing Time-Turners in the series, but teachers never are. This seems counterproductive since there are so many instances where they would be helpful in preventing everything from Quidditch injuries to Wizarding Wars. The logic against their use is the same behind any other time travel argument, but they are still used in Prisoner of Azkaban to save a hippogriff and Sirius Black... by children.

11 Xylomancy

Xylomancy is another subject taught to witches and wizards, this time at Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, that we never truly get to witness. It involves using sticks to perform divination spells and it's mentioned in a newspaper during the film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, but we have yet to witness what it truly entails within the series.

10 Magical Resistance

Via cosmopolitan.com

Magical resistance is a powerful way to deflect any harm that is aimed at a person or creature via magical means, but it's not a skill common to most witches and wizards. We don't see any of the Hogwarts teachers use the skills, also known as spell resistance, save for Hagrid, who has giant's blood.

9 Obliviate Spell

Via: Business Insider

Hermione uses a number of advanced magical spells that we've never seen the Hogwarts teachers use or instruct the students to utilize, including the Obliviate spell, which is incredibly powerful. Making someone forget everything they ever knew is one of the worst, or best, things you could ever do for them. While Professor Lockhart did use the spell, it was outside class and for nefarious reasons; Hermione used it to protect her family.

8 Dark Magic

via Warner Bros

Obviously, Dark Magic, which is a very potent ability of any wizard who utilizes it, is not taught or utilized by actual Hogwarts teachers during classes. Snape does use it outside class, and some of the replacement teachers sent in by the Ministry of Magic utilize it, such as Dolores Umbridge, who uses a cursed quill to enact punishment on students.

7 Wandless Magic

Wandless magic is more casual in the films, but in the Harry Potter books, it's considered an extremely powerful form of magic that most wizards cannot manage. The majority of magical folk require a wand to direct their spellwork, and Albus Dumbledore is the only wizard who is capable of performing it in the books. No teachers, however, use it in the books. Harry manages a quick Lumos spell without holding his wand, but his wand lights up away from him, still involved in the spell.

6 Animagus Instruction

Courtesy of Screen Rant

How are so many witches and wizards turning into powerful Animagi without any formal instruction? We never witness a Hogwarts teachers working on spells to become an Animagus or the actual process that it entails, but we do know that Dumbledore taught McGonagall how to become one and that Harry's father, James Potter, and his friends Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew all became Animagi to be with their friend, Remus Lupin, when he transformed into a werewolf.

5 Unbreakable Vows

via Warner Bros

When Severus Snape makes an Unbreakable Vow to help aid Draco Malfoy on his mission to take out Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, it's obvious that the magic is deeply powerful and important. Seeing as it's only Death Eaters who carry out this form of magic, it's likely forbidden to students, which is why we never see anyone perform the spell at Hogwarts.

4 Concealment Charms

Courtesy of Screen Rant

A concealment charm is an incredibly helpful piece of magic that helps hide not only objects in plain sight but the magical powers of any object as well. Concealment charms are mentioned in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, but the only time we actually witness a Concealment Charm in the world of Harry Potter is when Jacob does one in the Hogwarts Mystery game.

3 Love Spell Casting

Courtesy of Screen Rant

It's good that Horace Slughorn wanted his students to be able to identify Amortentia, the most powerful love potion to exist, but he may have helped fuel the fire of using it at the school, where the potion is banned. While we witness the harmful effects of love potions on Ron Weasley and Tom Riddle, Sr., Hogwarts staff and faculty members never actually employ this powerful tool in front of readers or viewers.

2 Resurrection

Courtesy of Screen Rant

It's interesting to note that while the Sorcerer's Stone was at Hogwarts, none of the staff, save from Professor Quirrell, who housed Voldemort on his head, actually attempted to use it. Resurrection is one of the wildest superpowers that a wizard can ever utilize, but the results are usually of the disturbing variety, which is why we never see Hogwarts teachers attempt resurrection magic.

1 Horcrux Creation

Courtesy of Screen Rant

Horcrux creation is such a Dark Art that teachers are afraid to even speak of it, let alone instruct students on how to do do it. Horace Slughorn's small bit of information led Tom Riddle into making seven of them, but we don't witness the process, nor do any of the Hogwarts staff use this incredible but dangerous skill, which requires using some of the Darkest magic to ever exist.
