Over the years, a lot of Netflix originals may have come and gone but arguably, none have been as hauntingly brilliant as The Haunting of Hill House. Released in 2018, the series goes beyond your typical horror story as it centers on a family that is forced to come to terms with some terrifying events from the past. In some ways, the story also represented an introspection into one’s grief.

After a successful first-season run, Netflix officially renewed the show for a second season in 2019. And while some may be eagerly anticipating the new episodes, there are also fans who believe the show should not be granted a third season renewal anymore (if Netflix has plans for such).

Mike Flanagan Didn’t Think It Could Be A Series, At First

After working on films such as Oculus, Ouija: Origin of Evil, and the Netflix Original film Gerald’s Game, Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners approached Flanagan with the idea of turning The Haunting of Hill House into a series. However, Flanagan himself was slightly hesitant at first since Robert Wise had already adapted it for the big screen in the past. “When [Netflix] first approached me about the show, my gut reaction was, ‘Well, it’s been done beautifully already. It lends itself perfectly to a feature format,’” he explained while speaking with The Hollywood Reporter. “I don’t know how you expand what’s on the page to fill a season of television. It would have to be a whole new deal.’” Essentially, that’s what he did.

“I approached it more as a remix,” Flanagan said. “Once I started looking at it that way, it opened up a lot of really fun possibilities where I could do something that was our own…” That said, Flanagan still approached the material like a feature film. “We shot it like we were doing a 10-hour movie. We cross-boarded it like a movie,” he told Collider. “We would do blocks of three episodes at a time, all cross-boarded around each other. So, it felt like we were making five movies, back to back.”

The first season received critical acclaim and as expected, Netflix decided to renew the series. Before he learned of the renewal though, Flanagan made it clear that the story of ‘Hill House’ was done. “As far as I’ve ever been concerned with this, the story of the Crain family is told,” he even told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s done.” True to his word, Flanagan moved on from the Crains when took on The Haunting of Bly Manor.

Here’s Why Fans Think It Shouldn’t Return

Flanagan’s series may be one of Netflix’s best horror shows but some fans still believe that it should not be granted a third season. Flanagan started off strong with The Haunting of Hill House, even earning an impressive score of 93% percent on Rotten Tomatoes. However, The Haunting of Bly Manor wasn’t as well-received.

In fact, it only earned a score of 87%, which would have been decent except it pales in comparison to The Haunting of Hill House. And should this trend continue, that essentially means that a third season can be the most underwhelming of them all.

After working on Gerald’s Game with Flanagan, actress Carla Gugino went on to star in both The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor. And if Flanagan would be given the green light for a third season of ‘The Haunting,’ it almost seems likely that Gugino will be back once more.

After all, she has made no secret that she enjoys working with Flanagan. “I really loved collaborating with him,” Gugino once told Tribute.ca. “He is someone who has a very strong vision of the way in which he wants to tell a story. So while being quite collaborative, I always do find that a director with a strong vision only helps me as an actor be freer and take more risks because they are taking care of telling the story, and I therefore can help them be specific through the character I’m playing.”

At the same time, it is also possible that a third season will also bring back other familiar faces, including Henry Thomas, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, and Victoria Pedretti. They also starred in The Haunting of Bly Manor after working on The Haunting of Hill House, albeit as other characters. It is also likely that they would collaborate with Flanagan for a third time, although Jackson-Cohen had confirmed that the cast is unclear about the possibility of a third season.

At the moment, Netflix hasn’t said anything about a third season for Flanagan’s ‘The Haunting’ series. At the same time, Flanagan himself has also said that he is way to busy too even be contemplating a third season. Back in December 2020, he confirmed that that “there are no plans for more chapters.” That said, he also remarked, “Never say never.” In the meantime, Flanagan has been hard at work on his upcoming new Netflix horror series, Midnight Mass.
