Believe it or not, Henry Cavill went through his fair share of struggles early on. In fact, he almost left Hollywood altogether for a career in the armed forces. In 2001, the roles started coming in - in terms of box office hits, he wasn't shooting anything related to Superman at the time. In fact, he was very much finding his groove and in some cases, getting turned down. Cavill recalls a critical moment in his career, which was a rejection during an audition that changed everything. Not only was Cavill turned away, but he was also roasted for a particular reason. Instead of looking at it as a negative, Cavill did the right thing and took it as a positive. He worked on that flaw and we can all say that it might be his biggest strength nowadays.

Let's find out what role he lost out on and what was the reason for the big rejection in the first place. Had Cavill got the gig, he could've gone on to shoot multiple films, which could've totaled an $85 million payday. Given the success of Superman, despite the large figure, he isn't having sleepless nights.

Lackluster Conditioning

We take it back to Cavill's youth. On the surface, he looks like the popular kid in school. However, Henry admitted alongside Men's Health that it was very much the opposite. He was the chunky kid that was often bullied by others, "I was a chubby kid,” the star of Netflix's upcoming The Witcher says. “I could’ve very well gone down the route of just accepting my lot in life and being like, ‘I guess I’m not going to do anything."

Of course, Cavill found a way to take it as a positive, he claims that he grew strength from all the bullies, "It actually helped me survive,” he told Men's Health. “Even the kids who were nasty to me at times and took pleasure in squashing me—when I finished a play, they’d say, ‘Wow, you’re really good.’ And I was like, ‘Okay, this is where I draw my strength from."

However, the same problem would re-emerge years later as he was trying to make a breakthrough in the world of Hollywood. Cavill auditioned for the role of James Bond, in the film Casino Royale. The film could've led to several others, however, his look was a major reason for the failure.

Out Of Shape To Play James Bond

The audition involved Cavill talking out of the washroom with a towel around his waist. The audition didn't go so well and Cavill would also get some feedback as to why, "I probably could have prepared better,” he said. “I remember the director, Martin Campbell, saying, ‘Looking a little chubby there, Henry.’ I didn’t know how to train or diet. And I’m glad Martin said something, because I respond well to truth. It helps me get better."

It all changed for Henry as he got in the best shape of his life, something he is still proud of us to this very day. Cavill admits, sustaining a diet while filming Superman wasn't easy, especially factoring in the pressure of such a role. He thrived and was very appreciative of his hard work from a physical standpoint to get there, "I know what it feels like to go from out of shape to in shape [afterward] I’ll look at myself like, ‘Man, well done,’” he said. “It’s not like I’m a golden god — I’m just proud of what I achieved.”

Daniel Craig Gets The Job

Cavill himself admitted that Daniel Craig was the right man for the job. Craig scored in a major way, appearing in five James Bond flicks, from Casino Royale making $3.2 million, all the way to No Time To Die, which made the actor $25 million. In total, Craig made $85.4 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth. Despite all his success, even Craig admitted that he didn't think the part was his, "‘I know, it’s ludicrous, it’s ridiculous. When I first got approached, I just thought: You’ve made a mistake. I don’t know, it’s still crazy.’

As for advice on who plays Bond in the future, Craig was very direct with his words, "‘Literally I’d say two things. Firstly, it’s your decision. Don’t listen to anybody else. Well, do listen to everybody, but you have to make the choice at the end of the day. It’s your bed to lie on. And don’t be sh**!."

We can safely say, it all worked out for both Henry Cavill and Daniel Craig.
