The world of blockbuster films is unlike anything else in the business, as these movies come with massive budgets, tons of hype, and the potential to make billions at the box office with each release. The MCU and DC are holding it down for superheroes, while Star Wars is as bankable as it has ever been. Because of this, roles in these movies are extremely coveted.

Back in the 2000s, superhero movies were coming into their own, and Spider-Man helped change the game forever. Tobey Maguire was the man cast as our first Spidey, and to say that he was rolling in the dough as our favorite web-slinger would be a huge understatement.

So, how much did Maguire make to play Spider-Man? To no one’s surprise, he made millions.

After X-Men hit at the box office, it was time for a flood of comic book movies to hit theaters during the 2000s, and little time was wasted in bringing Spider-Man to life for his biggest fans. Despite there being plenty of contenders for the job, Tobey Maguire would be the man to beat them all out for the chance of a lifetime.

Prior to landing the role of Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire had steadily been putting together an impressive career in the business. He had been appearing in film and television projects since he was a kid, and because of this, the studio was willing to compensate him well for his Marvel debut.

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Tobey Maguire was paid $4 million to star as Spidey on the big screen, which is a sizable chunk of money, especially when comparing it to the amount that others would make for their first superhero gigs. Maguire wound up being the perfect choice to play Spider-Man, and once the film was all set for release on the big screen, it would take the world by storm.

According to Box Office MojoSpider-Man was able to net $821 million at the global box office, making it a monumental success for Marvel and the perfect start to what wound up becoming a franchise of films.

The great thing about a film being a success and coming back for a sequel is that the lead performer is going to be in line for a massive payday, and this is precisely what happened when Tobey Maguire made his return to the big screen as our favorite web-slinger in Spider-Man 2.

Now, instead of things flowing normally for this film, there would be some hiccups along the way. According to Variety, Maguire was unhappy that the producer of the first film, Laura Ziskin, made a whopping $30 million, but he wound up being compensated with a healthy $17 million salary.

Then, there was the issue of Maguire being difficult to deal with early on in the production process for the sequel. Maguire had done two physical films in a row, and he complained of mild discomfort in his back through his agent. Per Variety, this was simply used as leverage in a tactic to get his way from the studio, making for a difficult process that nearly saw him fired from the job and replaced by Jake Gyllenhaal.

Things would soon simmer down, and Spider-Man 2 went on to become one of the greatest superhero movies of all time. It’s $788 million box office gross was a sign that the fans wanted more from Spidey.

Spider-Man 3 should have been the film that capped off what could have been one of the best superhero trilogies of all time, but instead, this clunker of a movie ruined things for many fans and went on to live in infamy.

Unfortunately for all involved, this film, unlike its predecessors, took a ton of criticism from critics and fans alike. There was simply too much crammed into this movie, and instead of something that was timeless, this movie is only remembered for how disappointing it was.

Nevertheless, Tobey Maguire was still able to bank $17 million for his efforts in front of the camera, according to Celebrity Net Worth. Overall, the star was able to take home nearly $40 million in base salary from those films, and it has been noted that he received backend money, as well, so his overall total for all three movies has got to be significantly higher than that.
