Is there a recent show that took the world by storm like Schitt's Creek? The Canadian sitcom, created by father/son duo Eugene and Dan Levy, recently finished its six-season run.

Dan Levy wanted the show to run its course, but people have definitely been mourning the fact that there won't be any more new episodes. The cast members get along great and that energy is felt on the show itself.

While Catherine O'Hara and Eugene Levy were big stars before starring on this show as Moira and Johnny Rose, Annie Murphy, who played their daughter Alexis, was actually really poor before she was cast. Let's take a look.

$3 To Her Name

Sure, there are other Netflix series that fans can binge, but nothing feels as funny or real as Schitt's Creek. The reason why fans went so crazy for this show is definitely the cast, including Annie Murphy. Her character, Alexis Rose, is incredibly ditzy but also has a quirky intelligence that makes her very unique. She has tons of funny quotes on the show, like when she says, "But people love extreme vanity…and they love puppies!"

Murphy's bank account had $3 in it before she became well-known for playing Alexis. According to CNBC.com, she went on The Kelly Clarkson Show and said that after two years of not working and her apartment actually lighting on fire, she was definitely having a hard time. She said, “I had just found myself crying in the Pacific Ocean, a very snotty cry, and the universe was like, ’Don’t do this anymore. This is not for you."

Murphy may be an Emmy award-winning actress now, as she won the 2020 Emmy Award for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series, but she is no stranger to struggling. She had really hard times as an actress before this hilarious show came along.

She lived in L.A. with a weird roommate, and according to her interview with Variety.com, Murphy said her roomie was an actress who was going to play a solider. Because of that, she would use the closet as her bed but randomly jump out. Murphy explained, "I would be eating soup on the couch thinking I was alone, and then she’d burst out of the closet all wild-eyed. It was one of the saddest, loneliest times of my life.”

The 33-year-old actress, from Ottawa, had a role in an episode of Rookie Blue in 2012 and played Morgan on the CBC show The Plateaus for its 10 episode season in 2015. She doesn't have a lot of recognizable shows or movies on her resume, as it really was Schitt's Creek that was her big break.

The Amazing 'Schitt's Creek'

It's a story that sounds like a dream but really happened to Annie Murphy: two days after she was so depressed about the state of her career and wondering what was going to happen, she was approached to star on Schitt's Creek, according to CNBC.com. It's always inspiring to hear these stories of how someone's luck changes in an instant and their dreams come true.

Murphy told Variety.com that she auditioned for Dan Levy, who showed it to his dad Eugene, and they knew that she was going to be Alexis. She shared that Eugene wanted the character to have blonde hair, not brown hair, like Murphy. After trying out for the parts of Alexis and Stevie, Murphy explains what was going on at her life at that point: "I was in L.A. for pilot season, for my third or fourth at this point, in 2013. Then waited by the phone for almost three weeks

Murphy told The Chicago Tribune that while she had some butterflies about being on the show, it worked out so well and she loved the experience. She said, "Honestly, I was so, so nervous to start because I realized, like, the night before [that] I would have to be acting with my comedy idols. But after the first few takes of the first scene, the four of us shot together, it was when Catherine O'Hara was like, 'Okay, how about we try it like this?' and it was so obvious that it was a collaborative, fun, exciting togetherness that was happening. And that kind of set the tone for the next six years." It's so sweet to hear that the cast had the best time filming the show.
