Dragon Ball Super ended airing on March 25, 2018, in its original Japanese dub and its English version finished its run on October 5, 2019. The show, which began airing on July 5, 2015, was the long-awaited continuation of the Dragon Ball series, which hadn't had a syndicated TV show since Dragon Ball GT stopped airing back on November 19, 1997.

Fans were happy to see a new show, but as Dragon Ball Super began to air, fans began to feel like the series was a cash grab for its studio, Toei Animation and its Licensor, Funimation.

This is because fans started to notice that it seemed rushed, firstly because the animation in the beginning arcs of the show was very subpar. Secondly, the first two arcs of the show were just retellings of previously released Dragon Ball movies, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods and Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F' for the first and second arcs, respectively.

While the animation quality rose with time and the storylines were original, the show was still considered to be a cash grab, replaying old story beats and generally feeling soulless. Despite this fans are still waiting for another season, but news about one has been scarce.

Will There Be A Continuation

While there hasn't been much news on the release of a new season of Dragon Ball Super, there has been a manga continuation of the story. This manga will likely be the groundwork that a second season of the show would follow. This manga has been releasing since June 24, 2016, with a new issue releasing every two weeks.

While this doesn't confirm a continuation, it does hint at one. It is also unlikely that Fuji TV, the network that airs Dragon Ball Super in Japan, will not order more episodes of the show, considering how much money it makes, especially when you add in merchandise sales.

Other Releases

Since the last season of Dragon Ball Super ended, there have been two other large releases of Dragon Ball Media aside from the manga. The first is the spinoff TV series, Super Dragon Ball Heroes, which started releasing on June 21, 2018, with new episodes of the show coming out monthly.

Dragon Ball Super also had its first movie release on January 16, 2019, in the west, titled Dragon Ball Super: Broly. This movie was a canon follow up to the TV show and gave a canon depiction of the fan-favourite character Broly, who had appeared in three previous non-canon movies.

That film did well at the box office despite having a limited western release and was the highest-grossing anime film of 2018, and one of the highest-grossing anime films in history. The film is set to get a sequel but news about that is even more limited than news on a new season of the TV show.

Plot Ideas

As mentioned previously, if we do receive a second season of Dragon Ball Super, it is likely that the show will have arcs that follow the storyline that the manga is currently following. This involves Goku and Vegeta fighting a prisoner who was locked away in a space prison for years. The plot also sees our favourite Saiyans get involved with a mysterious patrolman of the Galactic Patrol, Merus, who seems to be connected to the Angels in some way.

It is also likely that if we do get another season of Dragon Ball Super, it's the first arc that will be a retelling of the Dragon Ball Super: Broly film. This is in keeping with the trend of Dragon Ball doing this with its previous films, as well as other popular anime series like the sequel to Naruto: Shippuden, Boruto, which did a similar thing adapting its movie into an arc for the show.

This means that if we do get a sequel to Dragon Ball Super: Broly, it will likely be before a new season of the show so that it can be converted into an arc for the new season.

Release Date

As of right now, there is no information on a possible second season fo Dragon Ball Super, but with all of the media that is currently still being released and how much money the show makes, we are likely to see one eventually. Expect to see information about a second film before any news on a second season comes out.
