Bringing a movie to life is not an easy thing to pull off, and while every studio wants nothing more than for each of their releases to become hits, the truth is that some films don’t perform like others. Sure, the MCU, DC, and Star Wars can crank out hits on the regular, but other films take unconventional roads to success.

Labyrinth may be considered a classic now, but it was a long road to get to that point. Initially disappointing at the box office, Labyrinth became a cult classic, and years later, talks of a sequel have heated up.

Let’s see what’s going on with the Labyrinth sequel!

Scott Derrickson Is Set To Direct

In order for the studio to bring Labyrinth back to life, it was important for them to find a director who was able to pull off the unthinkable on the big screen before. As fans have come to know and love through the years, Labyrinth isn’t your average movie, and fortunately, it seems as though they have been able to land someone who has a clear vision of what he wants to do.

Deadline reports at director Scott Derrickson will be the man at the helm for the sequel. For the unfamiliar, Scott Derrickson has done an exceptional amount of work on the big screen, and when looking at what he was able to do with the MCU’s Doctor Strange, there is going to be a significant amount of optimism that he will be able to do great things with the Labyrinth sequel.

According to IMDb, Scott Derrickson has also directed other successful projects like The Exorcism of Emily Rose and The Day the Earth Stood Still. Clearly, Derrickson has the capability of working on darker tones in film, but his work on Doctor Strange also suggests that he knows how to inject levity, as well.

These two particular elements are going to be key in Labyrinth thriving once again. While the first film can be incredibly dark at times, there are plenty of moments that make you laugh. If his history suggests anything, then Scott Derrickson is going to be the right person for the job and can help lead the film to box office success.

With Derrickson set to direct, fans have also gotten curious about who is going to appear in this picture and whether people from the original cast will be involved.

Jennifer Connelly Is Set To Return

According to We Got This Covered, Jennifer Connelly, who starred in the original Labyrinth, will be reprising her role in the sequel. This is amazing news for fans who would love to have a story that directly connects to the original as opposed to a completely separate adventure.

Unfortunately, due to his untimely passing in 2016, David Bowie will be unable to reprise his role as Jareth the Goblin King. There is no word at this time on whether or not someone else will be filling that role or whether we will be dealing with an entirely different antagonist, but if the studio does make the decision to have someone else play the Goblin King, then that actor is going to have some massive shoes to fill.

As time goes on, more performers will eventually be attached to the project, which is set to be written by Maggie Levin, according to Deadline.

While the original film was not a success at the box office, it wound up turning into a cult classic that has been able to thrive for decades, so roles in this movie are going to be coveted.

Jim Henson’s Family Will Be Involved

Speaking of people working on the project, it is important to note that the Henson family will, in fact, be working behind the scenes to bring the sequel to life.

Jim Henson was the man responsible for the original, and while the legend is no longer with us, his family has continued to carry on his legacy. It’s hard to imagine a Labyrinth project getting off the ground without the members of the family being involved, and their inclusion in the project suggests that they are going to be working on something great.

Given everything that’s going on, it is hard to pinpoint an exact date on when the Labyrinth sequel will be hitting theaters. One thing we do know is that once a release date is set, anticipation will steadily start to build for the first trailer and more.
