The world was shocked to hear of the talented, Whitney Houston's passing nearly a decade ago when she was found in the bathroom of her Beverly Hills hotel room.

The star was recognized for having one of the greatest voices and an array of hits including 'How Will I Know', 'I Will Always Love You', and 'I Have Nothing', to name a few.

While her sudden passing remains a true tear in the industry's heart, Whitney's legacy lives on in her music, and countless other bodies of work, from film, television, and producing. Considering Whitney's success, the singer left behind quite the fortune, leaving fans to wonder who exactly it went to, and where they are today.

Updated on May 30, 2021, by Michael Chaar: Whitney Houston's sudden passing in 2012 left the world stunned. The singer was worth $20 million at the time of her death, however, it was later revealed that she owed Sony music a whopping $20 million at the time. When it came to her estate, Houston left it to her daughter, Bobbi Kristina. In 2015, Bobbi passed in a similar manner Whitney did. It was revealed Bobbi's ex, Nick Gordon had involvement in her passing, which many believe to have been a cause for his drug overdose last year. Today, the estate now rests in the hands of Whitney's mother, Cissy Houston, and her two brothers, Gary and Michael.

Who Inherited Whitney's Estate?

During an episode of Oprah’s Next Chapter, almost a year after Whitney’s passing, her brother Michael and mother Cissy appeared on the show to talk about her death.

In the interview, Whitney’s brother Michael confessed that he feels responsible for his sister’s death. With Whitney's ex-husband Bobby Brown being blamed for her drug addiction for years, he admitted to Oprah that he felt that he was the one to introduce her to the drugs that would lead to her death.

“It just happened,” said Michael. “She was famous. We were traveling on the road. We had money. We just got caught up. It’s been a battle ever since.” he went on.

Following Whitney's death, her estate was estimated to be worth $20 million, although it might have increased since her death. In the terms stated in her will, the estate was left to her daughter, Bobbi Kristina.

Houston wrote it in 1993, then made changes to it in April 2000. The estate wouldn’t become available until Bobbi Kristina turned 21. At that time, she received 10% of the estate, which was estimated to be about $2 million.

The will then stated that she was supposed to get more of the estate at the age of 25 and the rest at the age of 30. Whitney's ex-husband, and Bobbi's dad, Bobby Brown was listed as a beneficiary in the will prior to their divorce in 2007.

Unfortunately, three years after her passing, Bobbi Kristina died in a similar way as her mother.

In January of 2015, Bobbi Kristina then 21, was found unconscious in a bathtub at the age of 21, in the townhouse inherited from her mother. Bobby Brown remained at his daughter’s bedside as she lay in a medically induced coma.

Six months later, she passed away and was buried next to Houston in a cemetery located in New Jersey.

At the time, Bobbi Kristina’s boyfriend, Nick Gordon, was under investigation for causing her death. Her family blames him for her death and ultimately won a civil lawsuit of $36 million for wrongful death in November of 2016.

That lawsuit states that Gordon beat up Bobbi Kristina the day she was found in the bathtub unresponsive, causing what her grandmother describes as "global brain damage." The lawsuit also stated that he allegedly stole thousands of dollars from her bank account while she was unresponsive.

Who Gets The Estate After Bobbi Kristina?

As stated in Houston’s will, if Bobbi Kristina died bearing no children and unmarried before the age of 30, the estate would go to her mother, gospel singer Cissy Houston, and her two brothers, Gary and Michael. Houston's sister-in-law, Pat Houston, became the executor of the estate upon Cissy Houston’s request.

As all members of the family remain alive and well, they have taken on the estate since. Last year, Nick Gordon, Bobbi Kristina's ex-boyfriend, was found dead due to an overdose, adding further heartbreak to this despairing situation.
