A Starbucks customer is being hailed a hero after bravely throwing himself in the path of a raging man wielding a machete-like weapon, diverting his attention from the woman he was chasing.
The Good Samaritan, later identified by The Bakersfield Police Department as Blaine Hodge, 27, was in the coffee shop for a business meeting on September 9th in Bakersfield, California when all hell broke loose, according to the news station KNET. A screaming woman came running into the café, chased by a man holding a weapon that looked like a machete, according to on-site witnesses. The alleged attacker — later identified as 31-year-old Robert Rivas — was the woman’s former boyfriend and he seemed intent on stabbing her.
“She was panicked. She was saying, ‘Help me.’ Then, at one point, she said, ‘This guy’s going to kill me,'” said Joe Harris, a friend who was with Hodge at the time of the attack, according to the news station.

While patrons were desperately fleeing the scene of the assault, Hodge allegedly ran directly toward the assailant, forcing himself between Rivas and his former girlfriend, to try to stop him, but Hodge was unfortunately stabbed several times in the process. Authorities later confirmed that Rivas was arrested and charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and resisting arrest. Responding officers rushed Hodge and the woman to the hospital, where they were both initially listed in critical but stable condition.
Hodge suffered deep cuts to both hands and lacerations to his arms and knee. He needed around 200 stitches when he was taken to the hospital, and had surgery on his right hand, the fingers of which were left immobile. Both Blaine and the woman are recovering in the hospital. A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise money for Hodge’s medical bills on his road to recovery.
“There was a person in danger and I couldn’t just let her die,” a selfless Hodge stated from his hospital bed.
He added that his injuries are worth it if it means a woman’s life is saved. Some people on social media are calling the young man a “hero”, “a real legend”, a “superhero”, and there even is fan art dedicated to his heroism.
As for us, we are thankful that there are people like Blaine Hodge out there - a young man who did not think twice before putting his own life in peril to save that of a complete stranger. We wish both him and the woman he saved a prompt recovery.
