Two of the biggest movie franchises to come from Disney Channel would definitely have to be the High School Musical and Camp Rock. Both franchises did really well with fans and premiered in the early 2000s.

The first High School Musical movie premiered in 2006 and the first Camp Rock movie premiered in 2008. They are both the epitome of "kid-friendly" filled with catchy songs, cute dance routines, and storylines that are considered totally heartwarming.

10 Same: Female Leads With Brunette Hair Who Start As The Underdog

Both franchises include leading female characters with brunette hair to come across as underdog characters, to begin with. The whole time, it is easy to root for these underdogs because it is clear that they have a passion for music, good intentions, and kind hearts. In HSM, Gabriella Montez (played by Vanessa Hudgens) is the female lead. In Camp Rock, Mitchie Torres (played by Demi Lovato) is the female lead.

9 Different: HSM Had FULL Group Dance Routines That Were Choreographed

We’re All In This Together

Both franchises included choreographed dance routines but the major difference is that in HSM, every single character came together to do choreographed routines. A major example of this is when they performed “We’re All In This Together.” In Camp Rock, when the kids would perform, it was usually solo performances, performances with just one other person, or performances in a small group. It was never the whole entire cast of characters getting together to perform.

8 Same: Mean Girls With Blonde Hair & Attitude Problems

Mean girls with blonde hair is something you’ll be able to find in both franchises. In HSM, Sharpay Evans (played by Ashley Tisdale) is the girl who tries to always get her way. She wants to come out on top and she’s willing to step on anyone in her way to get there. In Camp Rock, Tess Tyler (played by Megan Jeff Martin), is the mean girl who acts like a diva and doesn’t care if she hurts other people with her bad attitude. Both of these girls are attention-seekers.

7 Different: HSM Was High School-Based & Camp Rock Was Summer Camp Based

In the first and third High School Musical movies, the characters were spending their time on campus at their high school. We know that in the second one, obviously, they go to work at a country club but that is only because they are having their summer break. For the most part, they spend their time on campus. For both Camp Rock movies, the setting is based at a summer camp where students get together to hone in on their musical talents.

6 Same: Competitiveness In Regards To Musical Performances

Something both franchises have in common is the level of competitiveness in regards to musical performances. For HSM, Troy and Gabriella knew that they had to step up their game and perform as amazingly as possible in order to beat out Sharpay Evans and her twin brother Ryan Evans. There’s a lot of competition in the cards there. In Camp Rock, all of the students performing together were trying to win at the Final Jam so that they could record a song with a famous rock band.

5 Different: HSM’s Male Lead Had Other Interests Outside Of Music

A huge difference is that in HSM, Troy Bolton (played by Zac Efron) had other interests that were super unrelated to music and theater. He loved playing basketball and he was always trying his best to juggle both interests.

Basketball was his first love but after discovering that he also loved music, he wanted to be able to experience both. Shane Gray (played by Joe Jonas), the male lead of Camp Rock only really cared about music and that’s what makes him so different from Troy Bolton.

4 Same: First Movie For Both Franchises End In Powerful Duets

hsm camp rock

One of the things that make both of these franchises so unforgettable is the fact that they end and powerful duets. There is incredible music sprinkled in throughout every movie of both of these franchises but the duet between Troy and Gabriella at the end of the first HSM movie, "Breaking Free”, was amazing. And the duet between Mitchie and Shane at the end of the first Camp Rock movie, “This is Me” is just as incredible. Both of these dudes are unforgettable to this day.

3 Different: Camp Rock Kept It Real About Financial Struggles

hsm camp rock

Mitchie Torres was going through financial struggles when she first started spending time at the musical summer camp with the other kids. Her mother was working as the lunch lady serving food to students and she would sometimes have to help her in the kitchen because otherwise, she wouldn’t have been able to afford to be there.

Financial struggles are a serious issue that so many families deal with in real life but that is not an issue that was ever even touched upon in the HSM franchise.

2 Same: Love Stories Between Teens

hsm camp rock

Love stories between teenagers are common in most movie franchises for kids and in both HSM and Camp Rock, fans of young love were not let down! The romance between Troy and Gabriella was interesting to watch unfold because they went from being very shy teenagers who were too scared to share their first kiss to discussing serious topics such as where they were planning to go to college. The romance between Mitchie and Shane was also very interesting to watch unfold because they started off not getting along too well and then eventually work things out.

1 Different: HSM Dived Into College Conversations & Camp Rock Never Did

hsm camp rock

A huge topic of conversation and the third HSM movie was about where everyone was planning to go to college. It caused a lot of anxiety and stress on the students because some people did not want to be too far from others. Figuring out where to go to college is always a tough time in life for young adults because there are so many options and not enough time to decide. Camp Rock didn’t touch on the topic of where to go to college at all because it only focused on summer camp time.
