Actor Zachery Ty Bryan, who played the oldest son on the 1990s sitcom Home Improvement, has been arrested.

Bryan allegedly strangled his girlfriend following a night out at a club. His arrest comes just weeks after the child star separated from his wife of 14 years.

The 39-year-old was taken into custody late on Friday in Eugene, Oregon, after a neighbor called to report a domestic dispute.

Bryan's girlfriend told cops that the two of them were arguing when he wrapped his hands around her neck and squeezed, TMZ reported.

The girlfriend said that when she tried to call 911, Bryan tried to grab her phone away from her.

Fearing for her safety, the girlfriend claims she fled across the street to hide. Arriving on the scene, authorities found Bryan sitting outside his home and the girlfriend at the neighbor's house.

Bryan was charged with strangulation, a felony, and misdemeanor charges of fourth-degree assault and interfering with making a report.

On Saturday afternoon, Bryan remained in custody at the Lane County Jail.

The alleged victim in the case is believed to be a new girlfriend and not Bryan's estranged wife, who lives in California.

After news broke of his arrest, Home Improvement fans claimed that the actor had "ruined their childhoods."

"Zachary ty Bryan was a crush of mine when we were younger now I think he should be kept in jail away from every woman on the planet," one fan wrote.

"First of all, this name brings back so many memories from the early 90s, when names like Zachary Ty Bryan and JTT lined the pages of Teen Beat. Second of all, don't strangle your gf," another fan added.

"I just found out Zachary Ty Bryan is 39 and arrested for assault. My childhood is officially ruined," a former fan declared.

Bryan was a main cast member of Home Improvement for the entire eight-season run of the hit Disney comedy.

He portrayed Brad Taylor, the eldest son of Tim Taylor (Tim Allen), from 1991 to 1999.

In actual fact he was one month younger than Jonathan Taylor Thomas, who played his younger brother Randy.

Bryan's character was known for experimenting with different hair styles, as well as being a trouble maker.

Bryan even won the 1999 Young Artist Award for leading young actor for his role in the sitcom.

But in 2009, the Boston Public actor quit acting, because in his words, "he had gotten tired of being in the industry."

In more recent years, he has turned his hand to producing horror films. He is also a promoter of cryptocurrency.

Bryan is a father of four with his wife Carly Matros. The couple were high school sweethearts and married in 2007 - but separated just weeks ago.

On October 1, just two weeks before his arrest, Bryan took to Instagram to announce that he and Matros were divorcing after 14 years of marriage.

"Almost Fourteen years as best friends, soulmates, partners and then parents. It has been an incredible journey, but together, we’ve decided to turn the page and move on from our marriage," he wrote in a caption to a now deleted photo of the couple together.

"As we enter into this next chapter, our children and relationship as co-parents and dear friends will remain our priority," Bryan continued.

"We understand this news lends itself to public dialogue, but in the interest of our children and our family, we’re asking for privacy, compassion and love during this time."
