90's kids listened to boy bands and female pop singers, as Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears topped the charts. But there was a debate that was always top of mind for those growing up during this time: *NSYNC or Backstreet Boys?

Part of the boy band craze was picking a favorite member and putting up posters of them all over. The Backstreet Boys had fun 90's clothing and hairstyles, and they are a very nostalgic band today. Just hearing the opening chords of the hit song "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" is enough to make fans want to get up and dance.

Howie Dorough and Brian Littrell are the richest Backstreet Boys with a $45 million net worth. How does Littrell make his money? Let's take a look.

$45 Million Net Worth

It's a lot of fun keeping up with the Backstreet Boys and fans love learning the good news that the band members have to share, such as Nick Carter and his wife expecting a baby.

Every member of BSB has a lot of money, and they earn cash from endorsing products and going on tour. According to Cheat Sheet, the Backstreet Boys were in a Doritos Flamin' Hot Nacho Superbowl commercial in February of 2019.

Cheat Sheet also reported that the band makes money through selling their albums and going on tour. Many artists will join the ranks of those doing a Las Vegas residency, and BSB has been performing at Zappos Theater since March 2017.

Brian Littrell also makes money from solo albums. According to Celebrity Net Worth, the singer put out Welcome Home, a Christian music CD in 2006. The album did very well on the charts.

Littrell spoke to Crosswalk about his Christian music and said "Whether or not you’re a Backstreet Boys fan or a Brian Littrell fan if you’re a music fan in general, any genre of music, my project is for music lovers. You know, it’s for all walks of life, just people that enjoy a good, positive message. That’s hopefully what we’ve been doing with the Backstreet Boys for 13 years, and that’s what we’ll continue to do.”

BSB's Success

Of course, the Backstreet Boys are one of the most successful boy bands of all time, and their combined net worth is $200 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.

It's definitely worth noting how the band is still doing so well after all of these years. That has contributed to Brian Littrell's net worth as everyone in the band has made money from the album sales.

They started out with their 1996 album Backstreet Boys, then their 1997 album Backstreet's Back, and 1999's Millennium was at the height of the boy band craze. They released many albums over the years, but it was in 2013 with A World Like This that people could say they had a comeback.

According to the band's official website, Millennium sold 9,445,732 albums and was 1999's bestselling album. In the U.S. alone, it sold more than 13 million copies, which is seriously impressive.

Forbes article from 2016 looked at the "top-earning boy bands of the century" and said that the Backstreet Boys made $60 million in 2000 alone. That was because of the success of their album Millennium and also because of "merch sales of a heady $10 per person," according to Forbes.

The Lost Money

The documentary Show 'Em What You're Made Of gave fans a glimpse at the inner worlds of the members of BSB. In an interview with Cosmopolitan, Littrell shared that they wanted to let fans see the hard things that they have gone through. He said, "We didn't want it to be a cushy, promotional concert film like the pop stars of today make. I mean, it is a making of a record, but it's also a making of a career, the highs, and lows, and hopefully, you get that in watching it."

Another part of this documentary was the revelation that Lou Pearlman, who used to be the band's manager, was taking a lot of the band's money for himself. Littrell explained that things didn't make sense because they weren't seeing the kind of cash that they knew they were making: he said, "You were selling out arenas and your CDs wouldn't stay on the shelves, yet I had like $80,000 in my bank account after, like, five years. That's a lot of work and a lot of travel for just probably about $25,000 a year. So I had questions."

According to Heavy.com, O-Town, NSYNC, and the Backstreet Boys sued Pearlman. Lance Bass shared a similar story to Littrell, saying he got a cheque for $10,000 and knew it should be much more.
