Despite the ups and downs that Chris Brown has faced in his personal life, the R&B singer has always maintained a close relationship with his mother, Joyce Hawkins, who has practically been by his side since he first landed his record deal back in 2005.

Breezy’s mom has been by his side through some of his darkest times, including the infamous incident with Rihanna in 2009 — which led to the star being blackballed from the industry for several years — his 2013 arrest, and his many feuds with other celebrities. While she’s always remained by her son’s side, Joyce rarely speaks out on private matters in public.

Though we don’t see her often, Joyce spends a lot of time with Chris, who has since welcomed two children: Royalty, 6, and eleven-month-old Aeko. In fact, being the doting grandmother that she is, Joyce is never far from Chris’ LA home to spend time with her grandchildren, who she often gushes about on her Instagram page.

What's Chris Brown's Relationship With His Mother, Joyce Hawkins?

In June 2009, Chris Brown pled guilty in the assault case stemming from the infamous pre-Grammy incident involving his then-girlfriend, Rihanna.

This was one of the first times that the public had seen Chris in such a vulnerable state while facing public scrutiny from those who were left puzzled by his actions the night he was said to have attacked Rihanna while leaving a star-studded bash in LA.

However, for every court appearance, Joyce was right by her son’s side. Still, all she could do was hope for the best, even after her son had pled guilty, which resulted in a five-year probation sentence, 1,400 hours of labor-oriented service, and a year-long domestic-violence counseling program.

In 2013, Chris was supported by Rihanna and his mother when all three appeared in court for a probation hearing over his 2009 assault case — but given that Rih-Rih was only there in support of her on-off boyfriend, it appeared she had certainly forgiven him for what had transpired.

It’s believed that during their time apart after the incident, Rihanna had remained in contact with Joyce, who eventually helped form a reconciliation between the two. The Fenty Beauty entrepreneur had always been friendly with Chris’ mom, who appeared to be the mediator in getting these two lovebirds back together.

Aside from standing by her son during his assault trial and helping him win back the Umbrella singer, Joyce has also fully supported her son’s music career, having attended countless of his shows and nationwide concerts over the years, which isn’t rare for a parent to do, but the fact that she’s always remained so close to her son is definitely notable.

In 2014, when Royalty Brown was born, Joyce was clearly over the moon about becoming a grandmother. She never failed to seize the opportunity to post photos of herself with the youngster on her social media platforms.

When Chris is on the road or traveling abroad, it’s not uncommon for Royalty to stay with her grandma in Los Angeles, having also formed a close relationship with Nia Guzman - the mother of the six-year-old, who relocated to California shortly after giving birth.

In a heartfelt Instagram post posted in July 2020, Joyce gushed to her fans about Royalty's big heart, stressing that she always wants to help others and put a smile on their faces, which evidently has made Grandma Joyce very happy to hear.

"MY ANGEL!!! IM SO PROUD OF HER. WHEN EVER SHE SEE SOMEONE HOMELESS SHE SAYS MEME WE HAVE TO HELP THEM!! SHE ALWAYS SO HAPPY TO GIVE. IT WARMS MY HEART TO KNOW THAT SHE TOO HAVE THIS HUGE HEART OF GOLD! GOD BLESS HER!!!”

In a post from June 2020, she echoed similar words, writing: “I COULD NEVER FORGET MY ANGEL!! SO PRECIOUS AND HAS A HEART OF GOLD!!!”

Seeing that her grandson, Aeko, and his mother, Ammika Harris, reside in Europe, Joyce doesn’t get to see the toddler as often as she sees Royalty, but that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t share the same type of love for him.

In a snap from October 2020, Joyce took a selfie with the little boy, while her caption read: “MY ANGEL!!! I LOVE YOU SO SO MUCH!!! I MISS YOU!!”

It’s fair to say that with all that Chris has been through, Joyce has stuck by her son’s side through the ups and downs — and she clearly couldn’t be happier with the addition of having two grandchildren in her family.
