Who is Bailey Jean?

Bailey Jean Cypher was born on February 10, 1997, to Melissa Etheridge and Julie Cypher, an American filmmaker. She is Melissa Etheridge’s first child.

Bailey made headlines when she was born due to her family's unconventional make-up. A few years after her birth, her parents revealed that her biological father was none other than singer-songwriter David Crosby. Jan Crosby was allegedly the first to suggest that Etheridge and Cypher use her husband’s sperm to have a baby.

When Bailey was three years old, Melissa Etheridge confirmed that she had told Bailey about her biological father. Etheridge and Cypher also revealed that their daughter called them “mama” and “mamo,” respectively. Thus, Bailey had a very warm and loving relationship with Etheridge and Cypher from a very young age.

Melissa Etheridge’s Relationships During Bailey Jean’s Childhood

Cypher and Etheridge drew a lot of attention in the 1990s when being openly gay in Hollywood was still a novelty. And for the first few years of Bailey Jean’s childhood, Cypher and Etheridge stayed together. They had another child—Beckett Cypher—who was born on November 18, 1998. However, Etheridge and Cypher announced on September 19, 2000, that they were ending their five-year relationship.

Etheridge soon reintroduced the idea of a loving relationship to her children in 2001 when she began dating Tammy Lynn Michaels, who was best known for her role on Popular. Michaels and Etheridge got married in 2003 and Etheridge became vocal about how important the relationship was for her son and daughter.

“I'd never been so clearly and purely in love before—ever in my life,” she said in her first joint interview with Michaels. “Not until I was 40 did I find something so clear and clean. For my children, for my partner, I wanted to get married."

In October 2006, Bailey Jean got two more siblings; Tammy Lynn Michaels gave birth to twins Johnnie Rose Etheridge and son Miller Steven Etheridge. The family spent nine years together until Michaels and Etheridge filed for divorce in April 2010.
