It has been almost 25 years since the death of John Travolta's oldest child, Jett. His passing in 2009 has left a void for Travolta that is palpable. With every birthday that passes, a photo of the forever-16-year-old is posted to social media with a heartfelt message attached to it by the Pulp Fiction star. A tradition of sorts that anyone who has ever lost someone close, and specifically anyone who has lost a child, can completely relate to.

While it would have been expected that Travolta and his late wife, Kelly Preston, would have received sympathy from the press, they received anything but. This is because when Jett tragically died, the couple found themselves in the center of controversy where they were being blamed for his death. Blame that was completely unfounded, but put into the press nonetheless. And it was at this time that Travolta and Preston found out who their friends were. One of which was Lisa Marie Presley.

Here is how Lisa Marie Presley supported John Travolta after the death of his son Jett.

When John Travolta And Lisa Marie Presley Met

Travolta and Presley have known one another for decades. But before the two were friends, Presley was nothing more than a fan of the rising celebrity. And after the death of Elvis, looking to bring some joy into her daughter's life, Priscilla Presley, used her Hollywood connections to arrange a meeting between the two.

Before rumors begin that Travolta and Presley dated, when the two met, Presley was 11 years old. Travolta was in his mid-twenties. But, there was an apparent connection between Priscilla and Travolta. This connection led to "three or four secret dates" but reportedly did not go any further.

However, it was during this time that Travolta spoke to Priscilla about the Church of Scientology. He has been a member there since 1975 and extended an invitation to Priscilla to come and see what it was all about.

Apparently, Priscilla found it to be a welcoming religious experience as she joined in 1977. And as a result, Lisa Marie had no choice but to join the institution as well.

How John Travolta's Son, Jett, Died

Fast-forward to 2009. Travolta is a happily married man to his wife, Kelly Preston. The couple has two children, Jett and Ella Bleu (son Benjamin will not be born until late 2010). For New Year's, the family decided that a trip to their home in the Bahamas sounded like the perfect, relaxing getaway.

Jett was Travolta and Preston's oldest child. He began to suffer from seizures at the age of two and was later diagnosed with Kawasaki syndrome. Jett was found to be autistic as well. It was during that tropical trip that Jett suffered a seizure while bathing.

Whether he slipped or was seated is unknown. However, the seizure was such that Jett hit his head so violently in the bathroom that it rendered him unconscious. And, unfortunately, Jett passed, never regaining consciousness.

Why The Press Attacked John Travolta And Kelly Preston

It is not common for the press to attack celebrities after the death of someone in their lives, especially if it is a death of a child.

But, after rumors began to fly that it was a result of Travolta and Preston being a part of Scientology that caused Jett to pass away, the couple became nothing more than tabloid fodder.

After Jett's death, the ambulance driver who took the teen to the hospital threatened to go to the press and tell anyone who would listen that Travolta and Preston refused life-saving medical treatment for Jett. In order to keep this lie from being leaked, the ambulance driver tried to extort $25 million from Travolta.

Refusing to give in to threats, Travolta and Preston turned down the request. They even went to court to sue. But after a mistrial was called as a result of a politician claiming to know what the outcome of the case was before it was resolved, Travolta decided not to move forward with a new trial.

The details of what the ambulance driver was going to leak to the press were revealed during the trial. This led others to question whether medical treatment was allowed in Scientology.

Because of this, Travolta and Preston quickly became parents who were part of a cult that would not allow modern medicine to treat Jett in the Bahamas.

And with stories like this gracing tabloid covers, the truth of what occurred in the Bahamas quickly spiraled into a web of lies that the public began to believe as truth.

How Lisa Marie Presley Supported John Travolta And Kelly Preston After Jett's Death

Presley saw how her friends were being viciously attacked in the media. Not only were falsehoods being said but the family was still grieving the loss of their son. It was nothing more than adding insult to injury in the months after Jett's death.

Because of this, Presley took it upon herself to issue a statement, trying to clear the air and bring clarity as to what Scientology's beliefs are when it comes to modern medicine.

In a MySpace blog, Presley called Travolta and Preston "the sweetest people in the world" and that her "heart was crying and bleeding" for what they were having to endure after losing their child.

"I am writing this because I have noticed that for the most part, people and the media have been very sympathetic and respectful, but there are those certain ones that want to use this horrible tragedy as an opportunity to once again, blame and-or attack Scientology," Presley stated.

She went on to explain, "It is not true that Scientologist's don't believe in medical care, medicine or medical Doctors and that may have something to do with this terrible tragedy."

"Whatever medical and or physical condition Jett had, I can tell you first hand that his parents were on a tireless, never ending quest to get and provide him with the absolute best care anyone could ever ask for," Presley continued.

The post concluded, saying, "I am not writing this to preach my beliefs, I am here to protect my friends."

While some said Presley was trying to defend Scientology, in reality, it appeared that she was doing nothing other than defending her dear friends who were grieving. And the last thing they needed while in this process was to be attacked with slanderous stories about their love and devotion to their son.

Why Lisa Marie Presley And John Travolta Left Scientology

After years of being involved in the Church of Scientology, both Presley and Travolta left the institution. However, it was for very different reasons.

In 2014, Presley made a statement after leaving the church. In it, Presley claimed that she was "beginning to self-destruct" while the institution stood by and did nothing but "taking my soul, my money, my everything."

After leaving, Presley never looked back. And a few years later, Priscilla followed in her daughter's footsteps.

As for Travolta, it is unclear if all ties to the church have been cut. But after rumblings of him making moves to break away from Scientology after the death of Preston, there has been no talk of the institution from the actor.

Because of this, the belief is that he quietly broke away from Scientology. However, until that is confirmed by the Saturday Night Fever star himself, there is no proof one way or the other of his affiliation with the Church of Scientology.
