Jack Nicholson is known for playing some of the most sinister characters, like Jack Torrance in The Shining and the Joker in Batman, and has a pretty interesting personality, but there's a lot we don't know about the actor. He's a family man and spends a lot of time with his kids.

The icon is now 83, and he's accomplished so much in his career, including raking up the most Oscar nominations for a male in history while also raking up a $400 million net worth along the way. But what has Nicholson done with all his riches? A lot of celebrities have bought and invested in weird things with a lot less money, but Nicholson spends his money on way better things.

Here's how the actor spends his money.

How He Earned $400 Million

Being an actor for five decades, and an actor of Nicholson's caliber will definitely earn you an impressive paycheck. During the height of his career, he was the highest-paid actor and he's been able to hold on to that wealth even years after unofficially retiring.

Nicholson has 79 acting credits, starting from 1956, eight producing credits, six writing credits, and four directing credits, so it's really no wonder how he was able to amass such a fortune. Having financially sound contracts for all of these credits probably also contributed to the net worth.

Before his acting career started, he worked for animators at MGM Studios, but instead of taking a job as an animator, he chose acting. It wasn't until 1960 that he started to get a lot of roles in film and television.

The role that helped his career skyrocket was George Hanson in Easy Rider, for which he gained his first Oscar nomination. He reportedly earned $12,500 for his next role in On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, and his role after that, in Five Easy Pieces, earned him his second Oscar nomination.

By then it was quickly becoming obvious that Nicholson was a talented actor. Five years later he was starring in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, earning his first Oscar and a million dollars. Five years after that he was cast in one of his most famous films, The Shining, for which he earned $1.25 million.

His salary only kept climbing after that. He earned $4 million for Heartburn, $5 million for Ironweed, $10 million for Hoffa, $15 million for As Good as It Gets, and $20 million for Anger Management.

For Batman, he negotiated a higher pay by taking $6 million in salary plus a percentage of the movie's profits. Since Tim Burton's film raked in $400 million, Nicholson cashed in about $60 million.

How He Spends His Money

Fans of Nicholson will know that he loves art and sports just as much as he likes to act. Nicholson is one of the biggest Los Angeles Lakers fans, and for the past twenty-five years, he's owned courtside seats. He often attends matches with his kids and sometimes, unsurprisingly, gets heated when the game doesn't exactly go the way he wants.

Nicholson is an avid art collector as well. His huge collection is said to be worth $150 million and he has pieces from artists like Andy Warhol, Jack Vettriano, Henri Matisse, Picasso, Rodin, and Botero. He started the collection, which features 20th-century and contemporary art, in the '60s.

Like most celebrities, Nicholson owns a lot of great real estate, predicted to be worth $100 million collectively from about a dozen different properties. He has a Malibu mansion worth $4.24 million, a house in Santa Monica, and a condo in Venice.

His primary residence though is a multi-property compound on Mulholland Drive in Beverly Hills, which he bought in 1969 and added to throughout the decades. One of the properties was once owned by Marlon Brando and cost $5 million.

He also owns properties in Northern California, Hawaii, and another property in Aspen, Colorado worth $15 million.

He needed to own mansions though because he has a big family. With five children, Nicholson has probably spent a fair amount raising them too. His daughter Lorraine is also an actress and studied scriptwriting at Brown University.

Along with mansions, Nicholson also owns a lot of luxury cars, and he's had to furnish his homes with something other than his art collection too. It is also probable that Nicholson has invested a lot of his money in the stock market.

Back in his younger years, Nicholson was also known to be a very big partier and often went to the Playboy mansion and even Cuba to do it. So the amount of money he's spent on having a good time should also be counted in his spending.

With all the money that's come into Nicholson's account over the decades, there have also been a few losses as well. In 1994, he was involved in a very publicized road-rage incident. He claimed the driver in front of him, Robert Blake, cut him off, and proceeded to take his gold club to smash Blake's windshield. For this stunt, he was ordered to pay Blake $500,000.

With all of these purchases and setbacks in Nicholson's wealth, it's interesting to see that he's still one of the richest actors still. But at least he didn't purchase his own mausoleum like Nicholas Cage or collect Barbies like Johnny Depp. Nicholson has class, he didn't squander his fortune and only buys the best because he can afford to.
