March 2016 was quite the month for R&B singer Kehlani, who was accused of cheating on her then-boyfriend Kyrie Irving with former flame PartyNextDoor.
The scandal came to light after PND, who is signed to Drake’s OVO Sound record label, shared a photo of him and Kehlani in bed together with a suggestive caption that read, “After all her shenanigans, still got the r&b singer back in my bed.”
People were stunned by the IG post since it appeared as if the “Change Your Life” songstress and Kyrie were head over heels in love with each other. But by the look of things, their relationship wasn’t going as great as fans would have assumed, which was clear after PND -- who once dated Kylie Jenner -- posted the daring pic of him with Kehlani canoodling.
What’s even more embarrassing about the situation is that just a month prior, on Valentine’s Day, the mother of one had expressed her love for Kyrie, saying she was celebrating the “first Valentine’s Day of many” with the NBA star.
Kehlani’s ‘Cheating’ Scandal
It certainly didn’t help that in the midst of Party Next Door insinuating he had Kehlani back in his bed while she’d been romantically involved with Kyrie, he chooses to drop a brand new single titled “Come and See Me.”
Either the R&B singer planned the whole scandal, to begin with, and interlink it with the release of new music or it was just one big coincidence. Fans certainly had their own opinions on the matter, but the majority of people believed that Kehlani had crossed the line after it appeared as if she had cheated on Kyrie.
It didn’t take long for the latter’s name to begin trending on social media platforms such as Twitter, as people began mocking the love triangle “affair” with tons of memes, many of which depicted Kyrie as a defeated man.
One Twitter user wrote, “Kyrie Irvin got signed a 90 million dollar contract and got cheated on by a soundcloud artist,” while another continued, “I can’t believe Kyrie just got his heart broken on Instagram after PND was posted up with his girl in bed. That’s the craziest thing I’ve seen in a while.”
The Instagram blogs continued to talk about the situation for days, leading Kehlani to interfere by sharing a lengthy statement with her fans, insisting that she didn’t cheat on the basketball player. She claimed the two had called it quits before she started engaging in yet another romance with PND.
The 25-year-old claimed that her mental well-being had taken a huge hit in the midst of accusations she had been unfaithful to Kyrie while social media users branded her all kinds of unflattering words after getting the impression she had been living a double life behind her lover’s back.
“And since you’re begging for the truth of on my love life: I am severely in love with my first love. Went thru a bad breakup and ended up easing into a relationship with a man who was one of my bestfriend,” Kehlani vented.
“Tho we reallzed we both weren’t exactly at a time where we were prepared to do so. No I’m not a CHEATER, a THOT, im a BELIEVER IN FOLLOWING YOUR HEART and not LYING TO YOURSELF.”
The “All Me” hitmaker went on to tell her fans that she had “selfishly” contemplated taking her own life after coming across some of the things people had written about her on social media before stressing she would take a break from Instagram, prompting her to also delete all of her photos on the platform.
What Happened After Kehlani And Kyrie's Drama?
Though Kehlani denied claims of cheating on Kyrie, the latter ended up liking a meme photo on Instagram that joked if the Oakland native had called him trying to explain herself, he would’ve ended the call.
This again left people on the edge because even though Kehlani was adamant that she didn’t do anything wrong, Kyrie continued to give the impression that perhaps his ex-girlfriend wasn’t telling the truth.
Then, in June 2018, the Brooklyn Nets athlete penned a heartfelt message on Instagram to clarify some things regarding his short-lived romance with Kehlani.
Despite having led people on to believe that infidelity was the reason for their sudden split, Kyrie wrote, “I have to speak on this simply because I owe it to you and you deserve the world to see you for you and how beautiful you are inside and out, and not for the attachment to an emotional moment in time where we both had to grow up and learn about our hearts and our souls in a world that judges and adds on fictitious pressure.”
The two are no longer said to be on speaking terms.
