Jamie Lee Curtis is one of Hollywood's most known and loved stars and is labeled as a "scream queen" for all the roles she has done in horror, more specifically the Halloween film franchise. Curtis was actually attending the University of the Pacific and studying law when she dropped out and ultimately decided to pursue acting, opting to follow in her famous mother's footsteps. Her very first film was the original 1978 Halloween where she played protagonist Laurie Strode, and her career continued to sore from there with Halloween sequels, Blue Steel, and of course, True Lies.

Even with the rise in popularity, one event would take place that lead to Curtis walking down the path of addiction like many other prominent faces in Hollywood. After years of sobriety, Jamie Lee Curtis is finally able to speak freely and candidly about her battle with addiction, and how she kept it a secret while working for so long.

Jamie Lee Curtis Once Got Plastic Surgery

Jamie Lee Curtis is living proof that someone making comments about someone else's body can have a negative impact on them. While on the set of the 1985 movie Perfect, a cameraman commented on Jamie Lee Curtis's eyes, calling them "puffy."

This comment made Jamie Lee Curtis feel like she needed to go under the knife to "correct" her puffy eyes.

According to the actress "...before anybody did that, I had fat taken from underneath my eyes because I was on a movie and I was puffy...and I can remember the cameraman saying, 'I can't shoot her.' I remember being mortified."

This is a decision the actress ended up regretting, admitting "I did plastic surgery - it didn't work, I hated it. It made me feel worse!" Since then, Curtis has been very pro-natural beauty, calling out terms like "antiaging" because "We're all going to [expletive] age!"

And Curtis admits to having other work done as well, like lip and botox, but says that "None of it works. None of it. It's such a fraud. And I'm the one perpetuating it." While the actress does support other people's decisions to do what they please with their bodies, she does worry about the impact this kind of thing can have on people.

Jamie Lee Curtis believes that these procedures are "wiping out generations of beauty" and emphasizes that "Once you mess with your face, you can't get it back."

The Surgery Led To Her Addiction

Following plastic surgery to have the fat removed from her under her eyes to make them appear less puffy, Jamie Lee Curtis was prescribed Vicodin, an opiate painkiller that is often prescribed to those healing from surgery or those with chronic pain.

Just like any other opiate, Vicodin carries a high risk of forming an addiction to it if the user takes the pills for long enough, and this is the position Curtis found herself in years after having the procedure done. This was only exacerbated by the fact that she had a dependency on alcohol as well.

Curtis can be seen as what many consider a functional addict, as she was able to keep both her drug and alcohol problem hidden for several years before they came to light. She admits that no one but the people giving her the pills knew about her struggles.

She also admits that she was very in control of the situation, making sure to never use pills or drink alcohol while she was working on her films. Curtis silently struggled with her addiction for ten years before she worked up the courage to get better.

It was in 1999 that the actress committed to getting better after reading an article about Vicodin addiction. This article enabled her to open up about her struggles with her family and led the actress to attend recovery meetings.

Sobriety Has Helped Jamie Lee Curtis Feel More In Control

While Jamie Lee Curtis's addiction never affected her work life because of how controlled she was, it still took a lot of courage to open up and seek the help she needed to continue creating the career that helped her get the net worth she has today.

The actress admits "with all of show business, the greatest thing I can do is break the cycle of addiction in my family line and stay sober through all of this, because all of this is a mind [expletive] and a lot of people drink over it - the disappointment or the excitement or whatever."

She continues on to say "I'm very proud that choosing to live a sober life has allowed me incredible freedom." And it seems that freedom is something Jamie Lee Curtis mentions a lot when talking about her sobriety, as the actress has previously said "I'm more free today than I've ever been" when speaking about her recovery.

It seems that sobriety has put her in a "one-day-at-a-time mentality," which she seems very pleased living in. Jamie Lee Curtis is a Hollywood treasure and has droves of fans that love and support her for her stance on body positivity, and for being a role model.
