It's not surprising that even after 40 years in the spotlight, Jim Carrey is still a beloved Hollywood icon. Sure, he's a little crazy. But that's part of the comedic appeal.

From movies like 'Ace Ventura: Pet Detective' to 'Dumb and Dumber,' the actor has always kept audiences laughing. And while he's landed some great gigs, Jim Carrey even almost landed the role of Willy Wonka.

Oh, and he recently wrote a fake-out book about 'his life,' if fans needed anything else to scratch their heads over. Of course, he's also gotten pretty involved in politics, which most fans think is a good thing.

Jim's grown to international fame for more than just his comedic talents, of course. But the film 'The Mask,' nestled in between Jim's other hits, was perhaps his biggest breakout role and the most memorable.

In fact, it earned him his first Golden Globe nomination. A sequel even followed, though it took some time to hammer out the details since the newly famous Carrey had a full schedule back in the '90s.

And it's true, 'The Mask' was pretty much a masterpiece. What fans really want to know, however, is did the role pay well?

Fans assume it must have because Jim Carrey started out at the literal bottom and worked his way up. Granted, by the '90s, he'd already been around for a few years and starred in a handful of films.

The thing was, 'The Mask' came after Jim's portrayal of Ace Ventura but before the movie became a surprise hit, says IMDb. So while Carrey was a cheap steal pre-filming, by the time 'The Mask' was released, the production company got its money back tenfold. Well, maybe a little more.

Because New Line Cinema paid Jim Carrey $350,000 to act in 'The Mask,' according to Celebrity Net Worth. And when all was said and done, the film grossed $351 million worldwide.

For 1994, though, that's the equivalent of around $600K today. Not a small sum for any actor, fans can assume.

Despite the 'low' pay in that gig, Carrey's next project would pad his pockets nicely. His next film, also in 1994, was 'Dumb and Dumber,' which paid him a handsome $7 million.

Celebrity Net Worth calculates Carrey to be worth about $180 million, having earned over $300 million during his acting career.

Jim was also offered $7 million to make a sequel to 'The Mask.' The next movie came out in 2005, titled 'Son of the Mask.' But rumor has it, a crossover film is coming fans' way in 2021, and it'll mesh 'Space Jam' with 'The Mask.'

No doubt, it'll be funny, especially if Jim Carrey's signed on to the project.
