Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones are longtime rivals whose feud reportedly erupted on the set of their 1995 movie, Batman Forever — a flick which many DC Comics fans have since deemed as one of the worst films of its franchise.

Joel Schumacher, who directed the motion picture, later came forward and admitted that the atmosphere on the set of his film was somewhat unbearable following the not-so-kind things Jones was said to have done to Carrey.

So what exactly happened behind the scenes of Batman Forever?

Updated on April 21, 2022: Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones have avoided working together since filming Batman Forever all those years ago. While they have appeared as presenters at a few of the same awards shows, and they have both appeared as themselves in a couple of documentary shorts about the making of the Batman movies, the two have not collaborated since 1995. That being said, it doesn't seem like either one of them is still holding onto a grudge – at least publicly anyway.

Jim Carrey recently announced his intention to retire from acting, while Tommy Lee Jones, who is now 75, is still hard at work. His next film, titled The Burial and co-starring Jamie Foxx, is currently in production.

Tommy Lee Jones And Jim Carrey’s Longtime Feud

Schumacher was the one who lifted the lid on some of the things that occurred while working with Carrey and Jones, but during his interview with Vulture, the dearly departed filmmaker, who passed away in June 2020 at 80 years old, certainly wasn’t holding back.

At the time, Jones had previously worked with Schumacher his film The Client, and apparently, there were no issues on that particular set, but when Carrey was cast as the second villain in Batman Forever, things took a nasty turn and the Men In Black star became hard to work with.

“He was fabulous on The Client. But he was not kind to Jim Carrey when we were making Batman Forever. And I didn’t say Val [Kilmer] was difficult to work with on Batman Forever. I said he was psychotic.”

He also weighed in his two cents on what the cause of the problem was for Jones, who had taken an issue with Carrey right from the beginning of when production commenced.

According to Schumacher, the Texas native took issue with Carrey stealing his thunder with his performance as Edward Nygma also known as Riddler.

Not to mention, Carrey had already had a lot of success with his previous movies, including Dumb and Dumber, The Mask, and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, so bringing in an actor at the height of his career was undoubtedly going to steal Jones’ shine.

“Tommy is, and I say this with great respect, a scene stealer,” he continued. “Well, you can’t steal the scene from Jim Carrey. It’s impossible. And, I think it irked Tommy.

“No, he wasn’t kind to Jim. He did not act towards Jim the way an Oscar winner with a star on Hollywood Boulevard, being the oldest member of the cast, and having such a distinguished career and the accolades to go with it, should have acted towards Jim. But what happens on the set stays on the set.”

Schumacher wouldn’t elaborate on what exactly transpired on the set that made Jones such a difficult actor to work with — but for the fact that the director himself found the behavior unprofessional and less than appropriate, things must’ve been very bad.

Jim Carrey Gave Some Insight Too

In 2017, however, Carrey shared some insight into his feud with Jones, recalling the moment the two first crossed paths after being cast for Batman Forever — it all went down while Jones was having his dinner during a break from filming.

The Bruce Almighty star decided to approach his co-star, but after seeing Jones’ facial expression turn all serious on him, Carrey soon realized that filming alongside the award-winning actor for the remainder of their time on set was bound to be a difficult task.

While appearing on Norm Macdonald’s podcast, the funnyman explained: "The maitre d' said, 'Oh, I hear you're working with Tommy Lee Jones. He's over in the corner having dinner.' I went over and I said, 'Hey Tommy, how are you doing?' and the blood just drained from his face.

“Like he had been thinking about me 24 hours a day. And he got up shaking — he must have been in mid-kill-me fantasy or something like that. And he went to hug me and he said, 'I hate you. I really don't like you.'

“And I said, 'What's the problem?' And pulled up a chair, which probably wasn't smart. And he said, 'I cannot sanction your buffoonery.'"

It’s believed that after production wrapped and the promotional campaign in support of Batman Forever had concluded, the two were out of each other’s way for good — Jones hasn’t worked alongside Carrey ever since, and judging by what’s been said, it’s unlikely they’ll ever work together again.

Both actors went on to enjoy further success with their follow-up projects, and while it’s interesting that the two haven’t crossed paths at some sort of Hollywood event, fans would probably argue that the fact they haven’t seen one another is probably a good thing.
