Fans of the DC Comics franchise were introduced to a love story like no other in 2018 when the movie Aquaman came out. The superhero movie tells the story of how Arthur A.K.A. Aquaman leads the kingdom of Atlantis to stop his half-brother, King Orm, from uniting the seven underwater kingdoms and destroying the world.

Although the primary focus was on Aquaman, played by the iconic Jason Momoa, fans got to see Arthur form an alliance with Mera, played by Amber Heard. The duo took on Orm together and ended up having an enviable romantic relationship. Heard and Jason were phenomenal on-screen and had infectious chemistry. However, not much is known about their relationship behind the scenes.

10 It All Started On The Movie Set

Amber and Jason's relationship began on the set of Justice League. The duo starred in the 2017 DC movie, but it wasn't until filming Aquaman that they formed a stronger alliance. The pair played love interests ― Arthur AKA Aquaman and Mera, Queen of the sea ― and their friendship and tight bond became public knowledge through their friendly displays on set. However, it seems it wasn't smooth sailing all the way.

9 A Controversial Prank

During an appearance on Good Morning America in December 2018 to promote the film, Amber opened up about her unique routine on set and how she always managed to read books in between takes. However, she had to adopt a method of using a bag made out of green screen material to protect her books from Jason as they had a little rift about it. She explained:

"I love Jason. We had so much fun together. But he is allergic to being ignored, and I am a bookworm who loves to read. He adopted this method of ripping out the pages of my book, so I would pay attention to him. It would drive me crazy because I'd have 30 pages left, and it would be gone."

The internet reacted badly to Amber's confession, with book lovers labeling Jason a monster and cruel.

6 The Double Standard Dilemma

In October 2019, Amber used Jason as an example to make a point about the double standards on nudity on social media platforms and call out Instagram on their nipple censorship policy. Prior to that, the actress uploaded a photo of her cover for the September issue of Interview Magazine, where she posed wearing only a black blazer. However, the image was removed by Instagram for violating guidelines because her nipples were showing. Amber uploaded the same picture to prove a point, but this time photoshopped Jason's head and chest on it. She slammed the platform in the caption of the post, writing:

"In honor of IG's rigorous and equitable Community Guidelines against showing the Female nipple ..and since mine enjoyed the brief privilege that's afforded to my male counterparts. I decided to pay homage by replacing it with a picture that DID meet IG's strict nudity guidelines."

5 Playful Snaps

Despite the whirlwind surrounding their relationship, Amber and Jason had many while filming Aquaman and even after. Amber's page is filled with playful snaps from hearty moments spent together. A famous photo of them in 2017 made headlines when the duo was seen in matching outfits. The good friends rocked fedora hats and amber glasses while trying to stay undercover during a filming session in Australia.

4 Utter Silence

In 2018, Amber dominated the headlines after writing an op-ed for The Washington Post, where she opened up about the abuse she suffered at the hands of her ex-husband, Johnny Depp. Her revelation led to Johnny losing his role in Fantastic Beast 3 as well as other endorsements. However, in 2020 a leaked phone call revealed Amber admitting to hitting Johnny during their marriage. This resulted in the rise of the #justiceforjohnnydepp movement on social media. Throughout Amber and Johnny's fiasco, Jason didn't publicly comment. The Hawaii native has come under fire for being silent through the ordeal, while some fans have praised him for minding his business.

3 Social Media Following

Although the first sequel of Aquaman aired in 2018, it wasn't until 2020 that Jason and Amber became official Instagram buddies. It was speculated, Jason only followed Amber on Instagram in 2020. It is believed that the co-stars experienced some friction earlier in their relationship, but they managed to overcome it to be best buds.
