In 1986, Letterman met Regina Lasko and the pair soon fell in love. However, he didn't break up with Markoe, with whom he was cohabiting, until 1988, and the ex-couple still had to work together.

Kelly A. Frank worked as a painter on the couple's Montana ranch and plotted to kidnap Harry Joseph in the hope of receiving a $5 million ransom. Thankfully, the plot was foiled and Frank was arrested and sentenced to 10 years in jail.

After breaking out of prison in 2007, he was given an additional 10 years, but was freed in 2018.
