For those of us getting sick of friends posting on Instagram with annoying selfies, food pictures, candid party shots and incorrigible cat videos, the photo-based social media outlet will soon introduce a feature to shut them out.

What's more is that the senders of those irksome dispatches won't even know they've been muted. The feature will not only allow one's feed to be bereft of those annoyances without having to unfollow those folks, it also gives users a chance to customize the type of posts they actually want to see.

To Instagram users particular about the type of messages they receive, it's welcome news. The mute feature is slated to show up on Instagram for social media folks to test in a few weeks, and is touted as a more delicate way to silence those invasive posts rather than opting for the unfollow route. Unfollowing — depending on the relationship with that person — could manifest into future encounters that could be awkward at best or hostile at worst.

The feature is already available to mute Instagram Stories that users don't want to see by tapping and holding down the culprit's profile image and then picking the mute option. As of now, that individual's posts will still show up on the main feed unless they're unfollowed.

But for images, by accessing the "..." menu right next to one's handle, users will be able to shut down those cringe-worthy people by picking the "Mute Posts" option. The feature, however, still allows one to check out that same person's account to view profiles and posts sent by that individual. Users will also have the option to refollow that person should they have a change of heart.

The new feature is one way to avoid the eye-rolling time-wasters that clutter up feeds, most of which were summarized by Ranker recently. Its top 30 look at most annoying Instagram user types listed selfies in the top spot, followed by those persistent couple shots, drunken bar pics, meal photos and images of money and/or alcohol.

Also in the testing phase is a feature informing folks when they've viewed all posts on Instagram going back 48 hours as a measure to curb excessive social media use.
