After years of starring in their own reality series, the Duggar family was unceremoniously taken off the air following their oldest son's criminal scandal. Despite 19 Kids and Counting and Counting On ending, though, the public's fascination with the Duggars has continued. To be fair, the family is intriguing, especially the older, married Duggar kids who are now raising children of their own. With drama like Jinger spilling details in her new book and Jill fighting with her father over money, there's plenty to catch up on with the Duggars—and that's not even delving into the oldest Duggar's prison sentence.

And for those fans who can't get enough of the Duggars even now, more information about them might be coming by way of an Amazon Prime special series. The upcoming series may just shed light on the Duggars' background, beliefs, and why they do the things they do. Not only that, but it may also divulge information about other—specifically other TLC—reality TV families and their controversial beliefs.

Is Amazon Releasing A Documentary About The Duggars?

Though it would be intriguing if Amazon created a series centering on Duggar drama, the upcoming docuseries isn't explicitly about the Duggars, per se. While Amazon is no doubt benefiting from the buzz centered on the Duggars, its series aims to discuss the religious organization that the family is part of.

An official press release from the studio confirmed that Amazon Studios has plans to release a docuseries that investigates the Institute in Basic Life Principles or IBLP, a fundamentalist organization whose principles the Duggars seemingly adhere to.

The series will focus on an investigation that could tie together multiple fundamentalist families like the Duggars and others such as the Bates from Bringing Up Bates and the family from the series Welcome to Plathville.

All three families are (or were), of course, subjects of TLC's reality lineup, which adds to the intrigue. The logline suggests that the production crew will dive deeper into Josh Duggar's trial, amid other controversial subjects.

“On the heels of Josh Duggar’s explosive criminal trial, the untitled project will expose shocking connections between some of reality television’s most famous large families and The Institute in Basic Life Principles, a controversial fundamentalist organization and homeschooling empire. In addition, prominent commentators, writers, and social media voices will explore the broader zeitgeist of reality television, social media, faith, fundamentalism, patriarchy, and power.” Amazon Studios

Because all the aforementioned reality series focused on family life versus the exact religious beliefs behind the family's motivations, the docuseries promises to be interesting. It may even provide more information about Josh Duggar's trial, which has largely been hush-hush while his parents and wife continue to support him.

The only question is when it will premiere, and whether the subjects in question will have anything to say about it.

When Does The Amazon Series About The Duggars Premiere?

Amazon intends to premiere the documentary series on Prime Video, as stated in its 2021 press release, but to date, no release timeline has been revealed.

Multiple sources have speculated that the series would air in late 2022, which did not happen. Other sources claimed early 2023 was the premiere date, which also hasn't been confirmed by Amazon.

To date, nothing has appeared on Amazon's official show lineup, and fans have taken to online forums to wonder about whether the investigation is complete and when the project will air.

There's also been speculation that Jinger Duggar purposely released her book ahead of the documentary coming out, to try and minimize any connection between her and the IBLP.

This does make sense because the focus of her book is about her changing belief system and how she got in touch with her religion outside of the structure that her parents raised her in.

Not everyone is fully invested in whatever tales Amazon weaves, however; one commenter wrote, "I don't want to get my hopes up too much though, you know? They might make it sound all scandalous but then they really reveal nothing?" Others agreed, but some insiders had more info that they hope will mean there is real dirt forthcoming.

One commenter said that a source close to the Duggars said that they had "been contacted" by Amazon's team, but that they couldn't reveal anything due to the need for anonymity.

Others hoped Jinger had been interviewed for the project, though that seems unlikely given the level of attention that would generate.

Ultimately, fans and critics will have to wait and see what Amazon's team comes up with, and draw their own conclusions from whatever information is presented.
