Whether walking through the winding streets with pastel-colored homes or eating fried chicken at the legendary restaurant Poogan's Porch, tourists love going to Charleston. It's no wonder that this Southern city became the set of the Bravo reality series Southern Charm. There are some entertaining BTS facts about the show, and there have also been some scandals.

Now in its seventh season, the reality show has shown all the fights that have happened within a friend group in Charleston, South Carolina. Some cast members, like Shep Rose, seem like they will never leave, whereas others, such as Cameron Eubanks, said goodbye before this season started filming.

Is Southern Charm fake or real? Let's take a look.

The Show's Cast Members

Fans wonder if The Hills: New Beginnings is scripted and the same thing is on people's minds when they think about Southern Charm.

Landon Clements, who appeared on several seasons of the show, said she was in a focus group when she was cast. That doesn't line up with what most people think about the casting of a reality show: that a friend group who already hangs out with each other will now live their lives in front of the camera.

According to The Cinemaholic, Clements said, “I don’t know if they want me back. They did all these focus groups and stuff, and I apparently didn’t do very well in the focus groups. Obviously, your feelings are really hurt, and I was like, ‘Why doesn’t anyone like me?’ and then I started thinking and was like, ‘Who goes to a focus group?’ Like, I don’t know anyone that would be in a focus group. Those aren’t my people, so no wonder they hate me.”

There is something else that seems strange: Thomas Ravenel and Kathryn Dennis didn't always in Charleston. According to Nicki SwiftRadar Online had some court docs stating that the couple was in Florida prior to Kathryn having their baby girl Kensington back in 2014. The statement came from Kathryn's mother. Kathryn also lived in Mount Pleasant, which is outside of Charleston. The story goes that Kathryn and Thomas moved to Charleston for season two of Southern Charm because this enabled them to be in front of the reality show cameras.

Nicki Swift also mentioned a "fan theory" that Thomas Ravenal's girlfriend Ashley Jacobs, who caused a lot of drama during her time on the show, was an actor and that she wasn't actually dating him. The publication points out that Bravo hasn't said that is true and that is just a rumor. But it's still interesting to hear that people weren't sure about Ashley's place on the show.

No Script?

Whitney Sudler-Smith created Southern Charm and is also someone who appears on it regularly, as he's friends with the main group and his fabulous mother, Patricia, is a major cast member.

According to The Cinehamolic, he said the show doesn't have a script. He said, "No. It’s not like I’m Jodie Foster on Contact directing myself from behind the scenes. You don’t have to do anything; there’s no prompting. That’s what makes them so compelling, is they have a lot going on in their lives."

There may be no script to follow, but it turns out that some things that supposedly happened on the show didn't really take place. According to Radar Online, while fans of the show thought that Craig Conover had been waiting to take the bar exam, he said that he didn't have a law degree because he hadn't completed law school after all. Craig did take the bar exam eventually.

Fans who have tuned into season seven of Southern Charm have seen how the cast members and Charleston dealt with the Covid-19 pandemic. Craig Conover, who has been on the show since the beginning, shared that he's happy with the show. In an interview with Page Six, he said, “I think it is exciting in a way that, you know, it’s still Southern Charm how you guys know it, but it’s something new and different again, which I feel like every year somehow with our group of friends, just there’s something a little wild and crazy and different."

Craig also mentioned the impact of the pandemic on TV and film: he said, “It was interesting to be part of an industry that has never really slowed or shut down production whether it’s scripted, unscripted, all different facets of productions all came to a standstill."

It's worth noting that Southern Charm does reflect real life at times. For example, the current season touches on the Covid-19 pandemic and the cast members talk about how Kathryn Dennis sent a monkey emoji, which was very offensive. One episode also features the cast members talking about the removal of the Calhoun statue in a park in Charleston, which reflects the Black Lives Matter Movement.
