It's now been a full 20 years since Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise were divorced. And since that time, both ex-spouses have remarried. Tom had his daughter Suri with Katie Holmes, and Nicole Kidman married Keith Urban and welcomed two more daughters.

But long before Suri became a household name, Tom and Nicole had their first two children together: Isabella Jane Cruise and Connor Antony Cruise. Because the two children were adopted, there was a lot of speculation about the family throughout Tom and Nicole's marriage, and well beyond, too.

And since both halves of the former couple have long since moved on, fans wonder whatever became of their first two children, and whether Nicole's eldest daughter, in particular, has any relationship with her mom.

Who Is Isabella Jane Cruise?

Isabella Jane Cruise was born in 1992 and adopted by Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, and much of her early life was kept under wraps. Today, Isabella is 28 years old and living her own life.

But as is common when discussing Tom and Nicole, the topic of conversation must turn to the former family's religious beliefs: Scientology. Whatever fans of the famous family think of the religion, it's clear that Scientology played a big part in the celebrity couple's former marriage, and in their children's lives (just like any religion).

While Nicole seemingly abandoned Scientology when divorcing Tom, Isabella has stuck by the church and even written publicly about her testimonial with the negatively-reputed religion.

In addition to her religion, Isabella is interested in art and fashion (she created her own clothing line called Bella Kidman Cruise). She's even, reportedly, gotten married!

But is she close with her adoptive mom, or has something driven a wedge between them?

Is Nicole Kidman Close To Her Children?

Part of the reason why Scientology always comes up when discussing Nicole Kidman is that the common perception is that she abandoned the church when divorcing Tom, essentially 'escaping' from both.

At the same time, the custody arrangement specified that the kids stayed with Tom Cruise, which they apparently chose, while Nicole met and later married Keith Urban.

So a lot of onlookers speculate that Nicole also created a rift between herself and her two eldest children when leaving Tom and Scientology behind. After all, Bella Kidman Cruise seems committed to her religion, so if her mother is staunchly against it, might that cause some turmoil in the mother-daughter relationship?

There's also the fact that since Isabella and Connor were adopted, plenty of fans think that their relationship with Nicole isn't the same as the kind a biological mother would have.

While that's an unfair assumption to make, it's still made nonetheless, with a lot of fans wondering whether Nicole never really bonded with her two older kids.

Yet the issue of the family's broken religious beliefs seems to be the most commonly pointed-to problem, especially after an interview that Nicole gave where she spoke about her two oldest kids, whom she hasn't been spotted with in public since 2007.

Fans Believe Nicole Is 'Disconnected' From Her Daughter Bella

Fans largely seem to believe that Nicole Kidman is significantly disconnected from both Bella and Connor. In general, most sources claim that Tom turned the church and his children against Nicole, and that's why their relationship is, reportedly, in shambles today.

The thing is, there's no hard proof of any of this speculation; it remains speculation as long as Nicole nor Tom speak up about it. And neither is likely to air their personal business to the public.

As fans continued to speculate over the years, Nicole gave the odd interview here and there while working on films. In one interview, Nicole apparently said she doesn't text her husband Keith at all, and that she doesn't like email.

But in the next breath, Nicole elaborated that "I have four children, so to stay in touch with them is very important." That, say fans, is a very vague comment to make just after saying she's not into technology, and that she prefers to keep communication with her hubby, at least, "intimate and personal."

Fans took Kidman's "impressively lawyerly phrasing" at more than face value, assuming that her statement was specifically stated so as to send a message to her two grown kids.

In short, detractors of Scientology claim that dissenters are "disconnected" from any loved ones still involved with the church because they're seen as being harmful to the believers' lives.

But, fans acquiesce, maybe Nicole just isn't the type to say "Yep, I text with my kids every day because they're like any normal adult children and don't wanna call their mommy anymore."
