Some celebrity couples ask for privacy. Others just take it. That was certainly the case for Parks And Rec star Rashida Jones, who shocked the world in 2018 with news that she not only had a secret boyfriend—she had a secret baby, as well.

The Harvard-educated writer and comedian managed to sneak around with partner Ezra Koenig for over two years. A report by Hey Alma reveals how the pair surreptitiously attended parties and events together for months without the true nature of their relationship coming to light. The couple even welcomed a son, Isaiah Jones Koenig, to their tiny family in August, 2018, after keeping Jones’ entire pregnancy on the Down Low.

Now that the cat is officially out of the bag, however, fans are clamoring to find out more about the man who helped keep Jones’ secrets. Who is Ezra Koenig? And what was his life like before Jones? Keep on reading to check out the inside scoop.

An Ivy Leaguer Uses Oxford Commas

While Jones’ time at Harvard is very Ivory Tower, her man’s educational background is just as elite. Koenig studied at Columbia University, where he studied English and Creative Writing until his graduation in 2006.

According to an investigation by Pitchfork, Koenig spent his time on campus thinking about romance and even writing a short story called “Off The Grid” for the university’s literary magazine Quarto. His story- which discusses love and money in New York City- depicts wealthy people falling for each other and dining on meals, ranging from Cordon Blue to salmon.

However, in a 2019 interview with National Public Radio (NPR), Koenig insists that he does not represent the stereotype of a moneyed New Yorker attending Columbia. “I always had a sense of humor about preppiness and the Ivy League; I went to Columbia, but I also had student debt and scholarships to pay for it,” he said.

Nevertheless, the English major admitted to NPR that he has a thing for prep school style clothes and grammar. As he put it, Koenig has an, “attraction to boat shoes and Oxford commas.”

From The Ivory Tower To The Spotlight

During Koenig’s senior year at Columbia, he participated in an on-campus competition that would change his life. What was the contest that would literally rock his world? The Battle Of The Bands.

Koenig and a group of three friends performed at the university’s casual musical performance competition and finished in third place...out of four groups. While the competition results were clearly nothing to write home about, the experience pushed the band members to upload their demos to the World Wide Web—where their popularity literally exploded.

Rolling Stone reports that within two years of participating in The Battle of The Bands, the group—now known as Vampire Weekend—had landed a prestigious record deal, a gig on Saturday Night Live and an invite to perform at London’s Glastonbury festival, where they made music for a crowd of forty thousand people.

Still, however, Koenig and his band mates have struggled with their reputation as an “elite” band. As Koenig told Rolling Stone, “sometimes I felt a little bummed. To me it’s very obvious that we’re using satire and irony. But some people, when they hear a song called ‘Oxford Comma’ and that the guys who made it went to Columbia, all they can do is roll their eyes.”

When asked if his family’s financial background had anything to do with his Ivory Tower education, Koenig responded in few words, “my family never had a lot of money.”

Becoming A Self-Made Band

In spite of the tensions concerning Koenig’s background, Vampire Weekend’s Ivy League reputation and the integrity of the band’s music, the Indie group has consistently topped charts over the course of the last decade.

A 2019 article in Pitchfork reveals that the band’s latest album “Father Of The Bride” was Vampire Weekend’s “third consecutive No. 1 album” within the category of rock.

Plus, when it comes to live concerts, the band has given numerous well-reviewed concerts and live performances in locations ranging from London’s Alexandra Palace to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Vampire Weekend’s success almost certainly made an impression on Jones, when she first started going out with Koenig. While “Father Of The Bride” was released a year after Koenig himself became a father, his other two No. 1 rock albums came out in 2013 and 2010, respectively. In other words—well before he and Jones began dating.

While the band is not scheduled for any concerts anytime soon, Koenig could very well be taking advantage of current times to spend time with his family...even if they are not-so-secret anymore.
