Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith are considered Hollywood royalty. It's hard to think about one without the other, especially considering the events that the couple have found themselves in during recent years.

Will Smith's unhinged behavior at the Oscars nearly distracted the public from Jada Pinkett Smith's alleged "entanglement." But how did the couple meet in the first place?

Jada Pinkett Smith's Audition For 'Fresh Prince'

In the 80s, Will Smith was already making music under the stage name "The Fresh Prince" in a hip-hop duo alongside his friend and co-artist DJ Jazzy Jeff.

Will Smith would get his big break as an actor by portraying a fictionalized version of himself in the American sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. During its 6-year run, the show featured a great deal of celebrity cameos and guest appearances, as well as help launch the careers of future celebrities. One of those future celebrities was almost Jada Pinkett Smith (who just went by Jada Pinkett at the time).

During shooting for the 5th season of The Fresh Prince, there was a casting call for young actresses to portray Will Smith's on-screen girlfriend.

After auditioning, she discovered that the casting directors were going to opt out on hiring her for the role due solely on her height. The role for Will Smith's girlfriend ultimately went to Nia Long, who boasts a whopping 2 inches taller than Jada.

Jada Pinkett Smith Deals With Rejection Due To Her Height

In an article posted by CheatSheet.com, it's reported that Jada later confided in Will about the aftermath of the rejection. “Apparently, the casting agent had just told her she wasn’t tall enough to play my girlfriend on the show. She hated that about Hollywood — that somehow her height (or lack thereof) was of more vital importance to the art than her abundant talents."

Soon after, things would turn out better than Jada expected. Despite the initial rejection, after she started building her career in Hollywood and making a name for herself, she was approached by The Fresh Prince casting crew to make an appearance on the show. “You know, once I got on my feet, and you know I was doing my thing… I had done a couple of movies and I did Different World, then Fresh Prince want to come back and be like, ‘We need you on the show... I was like, ‘No, I’m a movie star, I don’t have time.’”

This might've been the best thing that could have happened to the would-be couple. Not long after, Will and Jada discovered that they had mutual friends and began spending more time with each other, despite the fact that Will was still married to his first wife, Sheree Zampino.

After finalizing his divorce from her in 1995, he approached Jada and asked if she was seeing anyone. According to Oprah Daily, when Jada answered "No," Will bluntly replied, “Cool, you’re seeing me now." The rest, as they say, is history.

Will Smith And Jada Pinkett Smith Have Been Together Ever Since

It might come as a surprise to some of their fans, but in spite of how in love she was with Will, Jada Pinkett wasn't exactly thrilled about getting married.

As reported by Mirror UK, she opened up during an episode of The Red Table Talk about her emotional turmoil leading up to the ceremony. “I was so upset that I had to have a wedding. I was so pissed. I went crying down the freakin’ aisle getting married.”

She later clarified that her feelings had nothing to do with Will, rather it was a disdain for "conventional marriage". “Will is my life partner and I could not ask for a better one. I adore him, I never want people to think it was Will I didn’t want to marry... But I can assure you that some of the most powerful women in the world feel caged and tied, because of the sacrifices they have to make to be in that position.”
