Many fans applaud the activism of Jameela Jamil. Forbes magazine has even called her “the kind of activist we need.” The British actress and star of The Good Place has worked for causes to elevate women and BIPOC in the workplace, has been a vocal advocate for those with disabilities, and an advocate for inclusive body positivity through social media campaigns.

However, while she has earned praise, not everyone is buying what Jamil is selling. for example, leftists on Twitter are some of her most vocal critics, there is one journalist from the UK who thinks she is faking her disabilities, and even right-of-center TV presenter Piers Morgan has traded harsh words with the actress. While her fans remain loyal and she continues to attract massive media coverage because of her activism, her detractors remain vocal, and they have some interesting reasons for their criticism.

8 Some Aren’t Down With Jameela Jamil's "Girl Boss Feminism"

While stars Chelsea Handler and Amy Schumer complimented Jamil's efforts to increase the amount of women workplace leaders, many left-wing activists reject what some have dubbed “Girl Boss Feminism.” Socialist-feminists, like labor journalist Nicole Aschoff, argue that increasing the number of female CEOS only makes the ruling class more diverse and does nothing to help working-class women. Jamil rejects these critiques and argues that increasing BIPOC female leadership in business will have benefits that will trickle down to other women.

7 Some Think Jameela Jamil Is Classist

In addition to her framing feminism from a capitalist lens, many left-wing activists and socialist feminists believe that she is classist. Jamil has an eight-point recipe for success but her detractors point out that she acts like the metrics of her success are available to everyone. She has also belittled the political campaigns of progressive politicians like Bernie Sanders. While she has posted that she agrees with his comments, some point to her own beliefs as inconsistent, that she may like Bernie’s comments but that she does little to nothing to support his policies.

6 Some Think Jameela Jamil Is Performative

While many of her critics act in good faith because of their dedication to their own politics, some are just bad faith detractors. Celebrities often attract bad faith criticism because of their high-profile position. Success attracts haters, as the old saying goes. That said, some do think that because Jamil is classist in her approach to activism and feminism that she is less interested in creating systemic change and more interested in generating attention for her brand.

5 Some Think Jameela Jamil Is Self-Centered

Many activists also object to how Jamil centers herself in her work. Many think that modesty is the best approach to celebrity activism, like Danny Devito, another celebrity activist, but unlike Jamil, he puts the work of others ahead of his name or public relations. Some think that Jamil often frames her work from her own point of view, not the point of view of those she is trying to help.

4 Some Think Jameela Jamil Is Faking It

While this attack is made more in bad faith than other criticisms levied against Jamil, some journalists and pundits think that Jamil suffers from Munchausen Syndrome, a mental disorder that causes someone to pretend they are sick and to feign symptoms. Piers Morgan, a pundit notorious for starting online feuds, attacked Jamil in a series of tweets accusing her of faking her disabilities. The two went back and forth for quite some time before Piers acquiesced, and the entire exchange took a serious toll on Jamil's mental health.

3 Some Were Extremely Upset By Jameela Jamil's Reality TV Show

Along with Usher, Jamil was slated to be an Executive Producer of a show called The Activist, a reality competition series where community organizers would compete for a chance to win money for their cause. Activists across the political spectrum were outraged and took social media by storm. Many, even non-activists, were outraged that at a time during such political strife and such widespread economic insecurity that she would belittle activism so blatantly. For many people, activism is not a hobby or a side project, the way some think Jamil approaches it, but rather it is their only choice. For many who take on a social cause, they do so because to stay complacent could mean life or death. The controversial show only added to the criticism that Jamil is out of touch.

2 Some Think Jameela Jamil Refuses To Accept Accountability

While many have pointed these problematic aspects to Jamil's work to her attention, albeit through seemingly bad faith social media comments, Jamil does not seem willing to hear criticism of her work, rather she is quick to justify herself and while she has occasionally apologized for problematic statements, many think it is too little too late.

1 Some Think Jameela Jamil Is Selective With Her Solidarity

In addition to all the objections and grievances with Jamil’s work listed here, some also object to what leftists describe as “selective solidarity”. In other words, some believe that Jamil turns a blind eye to things like class to focus on race and gender, and some further object to Jamil ignoring that for millions of people, all three of these things intersect. While Jamil maintains her reputation as an activist, it has failed to impress socialists on Twitter, critics of "girl boss" feminism, and Piers Morgan.
