The actor works really hard to bring Groot’s words to life.
Vin Diesel made a staggering amount of money for being the voice of Groot, a tree-like being and member of the Guardians of the Galaxy crew. Like Rocket Racoon (Bradley Cooper), Diesel doesn't appear in the film but his many “I am Groot” voice-overs do!
The actor has to repeatedly record Groot’s three-worded dialogue in multiple ways, since it is all the character ever says. The only characters in the MCU who are known to speak Groot are Thor; thanks to his All-Tongue superpower and Rocket Racoon, because he has spent way too much time with Groot.
Vin Diesel Has The English Translations To Groot’s Language
In the MCU, Groot is described as an extraterrestrial, sentient tree-like creature whose language is impossible to understand, due to the "stiffness of their larynxes". Their speech is reduced to sound as if they're repeating the phrase "I am Groot", made immensely popular by the Guardians of the Galaxy character.
When a fan asked James Gunn if Vin Diesel knew the meaning of Groot's dialogues while recording them, here's what he had to say!
"Yes Vin has his own script with what Groot is saying. He works really hard at getting the meaning of each line as well as he can."
The actor-director also shared that the character has quite the sailor's mouth. He explained in the Tweet, "Baby/kid Groot drops constant F-bombs".
When Groot Referred To Rocket As 'Dad'
The Suicide Squad director also addressed a viral video which claimed to know Groot's real lines from the Avengers: Infinity War script.
Although he credited that most of them were "good guesses, but not exact", this particular translation was spot on.
"The last one, "Dad" is correct (because I've shared this before)."
After Thanos snapped his fingers in the closing moments of the film, bringing about the blip that changes the world forever, Groot along with many other heroes turned to dust.
Before Groot disappears, he looks over at Rocket and calls him "Dad", but viewers only heard "I am Groot".
Marvel fans were devastated upon learning about it, and requested Gunn to help them with a class of sorts, where they could learn the creature's language!
