James Van Der Beek Says He Loves His Ugly Cry Face Meme

James Van Der Beek's ugly cry face memes have been all over the social media lately, but the actor doesn’t mind at all. In fact, he actually loves them.

As the cast reunited for a reunion, 20 years after the hit WB show Dawson’s Creek began, there is an iconic shot of Van Der Beek’s face entertaining fans once again. Thanks to the internet and all things that go viral, Dawson Leery’s ugly cry face has become a viral meme. Fans of the show will recall the shot from the scene where his true love Joey Potter ditches him for his best pal, Pacey Witter.

During the cast reunion interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor admitted he is just fine with his crying face becoming a meme.

“I love it. It’s hilarious to me that you can work for six years on a show, 120-something hours, and it gets boiled down to three seconds,” revealed Van Der Beek on his character’s new found fame.

The cast recently got together to discuss their six-year journey on the teen drama. Although not all the cast members were invited back for the article. Margaret Humes and John Michael Shipp, who played Dawson’s loveable and equally dramatic parents Gail and Mitch Leery were noticeably absent from the special spread. Turns out they were not asked, and Humes made sure fans knew they were not asked to participate.

Memes are of course all the rage these days, with many old school TV show moments being used to express different current moods. But seriously, the Dawson GIF is one of the best around and not just because it is hilarious. It is so good because of nostalgia, with the image taking fans back to a time when life was all about Jen, Dawson, Joey, Pacey, Andi, and Jack.

James Van Der Beek is not ashamed of the role that made him a household name, even though his Dawson’s ugly cry face has taken over the Internet. The soon-to-be father of five is embracing the new meme created from his teenage face. In fact, he actually loves it. Talk about being a good sport and going with the flow!
