With the news that there's a Supernatural prequel in the works, fans wonder if Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki are still close, as Jared had no idea that it was happening. This definitely surprised fans, as Jared Padalecki has a reputation for being a kind and compassionate person in Hollywood, and his Gilmore Girls co-stars have expressed how much they love him over the years.

Jared has a sweet relationship with his wife Genevieve and he's got a new TV show called Walker. But since Supernatural has now come to an end and it was such a big part of Jared's acting career, fans can't help but still take an interest in it. Jared Padalecki actually came close to not being cast on Supernatural. Let's take a look at what happened.

Sam... And Dean

Fans can't imagine anyone other than Jared Padalecki playing Sam on Supernatural. He has done such a great job with the role and he and Jensen Ackles have amazing chemistry. While Jared Padalecki said goodbye to Supernatural, fans should know this fun fact about his casting on the show.

As it turns out, the fact that Jared was on Gilmore Girls meant he came close to not being cast on Supernatural.

According to TV Guide, Jared said that his manager said that creator Eric Kripke said that because of Dean Forester, Jared might not be the right fit.

Jared explained, "Eric's like, 'Uh, I've seen Gilmore Girls. We want Sam to be really smart.' And so my manager had to go, 'Uh, well, my client is a National Merit Scholar.'" Jared continued, "My manager called me and was like, 'Hey listen, don't be charismatic, don't be charming. Just be hyper-intelligent.'"

TV Guide said that both actor David Duchovny and Rory Gilmore have Bachelor degrees in English from Yale, so Jared said, "So when I met [Kripke], I felt like I was in this weird zone where I was trying to channel my inner David Duchovny or something."

This is funny to hear, as while Dean on Gilmore Girls might not have been a college graduate like Rory, and he wasn't as book smart as Sam on Supernatural, he could keep up with Rory conversationally and they did have sweet banter on a regular basis.

Supernatural's large fanbase has loved watching Sam and Dean over the years. In the pilot episode, fans learned that Sam and Dean were still grieving the death of their mom, Mary. While Sam was going to Stanford University, Dean said that their dad had disappeared, so they teamed up to try to find him.

In the meantime, Sam and Dean worked on their first supernatural case together, as they came upon a "Woman in White" who was a ghost. The episode concluded with Sam realizing that his girlfriend Jessica had been killed in the same awful way as his mom Mary, which made him realize that he had a new calling in life: to work with Dean and try to figure out what was going on.

Fans hope that a series finale will give them everything that they're looking for, and in the case of Supernatural, it was tough for Jared Padalecki to say goodbye, too.

In an interview with Collider.com, Jared talked about how the show as a massive part of his life. He said, "I still am grieving Supernatural. I really am. It was 15 and a half years. I met my wife on the show. I met my dear friend, and many dear friends. I really enjoyed Sam Winchester. So, I’m still grieving that process."

Jared continued, "Ultimately, Supernatural was such a big part of my life. I’m 38, and that was 15 and a half years of my life. There’s no real way to calculate it, and I don’t think I’ll ever really grasp that or make sense of it."
