Coming from a family of actors, or that were around the business, Jennifer Aniston seemed destined for stardom. However, believe it or not, her father, who was an actor, discouraged her from taking that route. Jen's dad made mention that the rejection part of the industry was hard to take for anyone.

Jen stuck to her guns and big things started to take place once she finally moved to LA. Auditions started coming in, but as we'll see in this article, she wasn't jumping on every opportunity, even one that most young actors would say yes to without hesitation. According to Jen, she turned down a certain iconic part because the atmosphere was like a "boys club." It all worked out in the end as shortly after, Aniston was cast into 'Friends'. Believe it or not, back then, some in the business told Aniston it would not be her big break. Oh boy, how wrong they were!

The Audition Process Was Tough At First

Unlike her current status, which features script after script coming in, the start was a little different. Not only was Jen balancing other jobs, but she was also failing at auditions for simple things like commercials. She explained the process with Collider, "Yes. I worked at an advertising agency, as a receptionist. I worked two days as a bike messenger. It was really wrong to put me on a bike in New York City with taxi cabs. And I worked at an ice cream place in Lincoln Center."

"And then, I waitressed for about two and a half years. All the while, I was auditioning, but I just couldn’t get arrested. I couldn’t even get a commercial. For commercial auditions, you had to go in with three or five people, and they put you in front of a white screen and tell you, “You’re at a party. You have a burger, and you have a beer, and you’re flirting with this one. Go!” It was just so awkward. I was terrible at that. I couldn’t even get a commercial."

Aniston was encouraged to become a lawyer by her dad, though she decided against it, moving to LA, "My dad had moved to Los Angeles about five years before I had moved out. I was just on a summer vacation to go visit him. I had graduated from high school and I chose not to go to college, so I was pounding the pavement, doing my waitressing. I had a manager, who I think was a manager, and an agent. I went to visit my dad in L.A. and went on a couple auditions. I asked my friend for a hundred bucks, so that I could get headshots. About three months in, I got a sitcom, which was awesome."

It would all start to work in her favor, however early on, Jen said no to a huge opportunity.

Turning Down 'Saturday Night Live'

Sitting alongside Howard Stern, Aniston opened up about her experience visiting SNL. According to Aniston, she turned down the gig as the environment just didn't seem right, "I didn’t think I would like that environment. I remember turning up and [Adam] Sandler was there and [David] Spade was there, and I’d known them already and they were like, ‘Look, Aniston’s here!’ I met them when I was 20, 21, after I’d done a television show with a guy who knew them.”

In her early 20s at the time, Aniston found it to be too much of a boys club, with less emphasis on women, "I was like, ‘I think that women need to be treated better here.’ Because it was such a boys club,” she said. “You’re just, not the brightest when you’re in your early 20s. I didn’t lecture him, I was just saying what I would hope if I was to do this, what I would hope it to be.”

It all worked in Jen's favor as shortly after, 'Friends Like Us' showed up, with a script that immediately captivated Aniston. The show would get picked up after the pilot episode and was changed to 'Friends'. That would launch Aniston's career to stardom.

Despite the SNL snub, there were no hard feelings as Jen showed up on the show a couple of times in the past. She would also work a couple of films alongside Adam Sandler, despite her early experience in meeting him on SNL.

Jen made the right call and a very brave one.
