Celebrity power couples seem to dominate the headlines in a way that few other things can. People love to know all the juicy details about the dating lives of the rich and famous, and going to any supermarket will reveal loads of magazines that will gladly cover any and every celebrity couple that they can.

Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer are A-list stars in their own right, and once they struck up a romance, the media was all over it. Their time eventually came to an end, and Mayer would ultimately pen a song inspired by his time with Aniston.

Let’s take a look at the song John Mayer wrote about Jennifer Aniston.

The Pair Dated For Quite Some Time

Given that both John Mayer and Jennifer Aniston are two famous faces who are notorious celebrity daters, it makes sense that the media had a field day when these two began their relationship. During their time together, people simply could not get enough of what was going on between them.

Prior to getting together Jennifer Aniston was a film and television star who had done her best work on Friends. Aniston was one of the biggest performers of the 90s and 2000s, and she was perhaps the most desired woman on the planet during that time. Needless to say, any guy that has dated her has been considered one of the luckiest men alive.

Mayer, meanwhile, had risen to prominence as an amazing guitarist and a talented songwriter. People can say what they want about his singing voice, but there is no denying that the man is able to produce gold in the studio and on stage.

The duo met one another back in 2008 at the Oscars, and from there, they would strike up a romance that lasted until August of the same year. After reconnecting, they would once again separate, only this time, it would be for good. Mayer gave an interview about breaking things off with Aniston, comparing it to burning the nation’s flag.

“He had to put that out there that he broke up with me. And especially because it's me. It's not just some girl he's dating. I get it. We're human. But I feel seriously protective of him and us. Trust me, you'll never see that happen again from that man,” said Aniston in response.

She Inspired The Song “Shadow Days”

Now that their relationship was finished, Mayer did what any good songwriter does: he tapped into the emotions from the relationship and started writing a song. That song would become “Shadow Days,” which appeared on his album Born and Raised.

When speaking with Us Weekly, a source revealed, “Shadow Days” is about Jen. It really took him a long time to get over her. He really loved her a lot.”

“He wrote the song as a farewell letter knowing [Aniston] would hear it. Ultimately he's done a lot of self-reflection though and he realises they weren't right for each other,” they continued.

“Shadow Days” would become Mayer’s lead single for the album Born and Raised, and it wound up finding a place on the Billboard Charts. While not a huge success like some of his previous singles, Mayer did manage to land at the number 42 spot on the Hot 100, proving that heartbreak can be a catalyst for a great song.

Aniston Has Dated Other Rock Stars

Since their split, both stars have found relationships with others. Interestingly, Mayer was not the first major musician that Aniston had dated. In fact, she once dated Adam Duritz from Counting Crows during the 90s.

During that time, Friends was the biggest thing on television, and every guy on the planet wanted to be with Jennifer Aniston. To be fair, that last part hasn’t changed much. Adam Duritz, meanwhile, was fresh off of winning a couple of Grammys with his band and was sitting atop the music industry.

The couple’s romance was not nearly as publicized as Aniston’s time with Mayer, but they were still an interesting couple from the decade. In an odd twist, Duritz wound up dating Aniston’s Friends co-star, Courteney Cox, as well.

When speaking with Men’s Health about those relationships and the media coverage, Duritz would say, “It wasn't great for me, it wasn't great for my band. But it's nothing I did. I'm not gonna link people's idiocy to my choices, because those were perfectly reasonable choices. They were nice girls and I went out with them and that was that.”

Though it’s not his biggest hit, “Shadow Days” is a John Mayer tune that will forever be linked with Jennifer Aniston.
