Things are looking good for Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck these days. However, that wasn't always the case. The couple struggled when their romance which was thrust into the spotlight during the early 2000s and in turn, played a terrible role in the 'success' of their film, Gigli. The film received horrible reviews. Among them included, "There truly is no reason to see this film," and "The film isn't just bad, it's jaw-droppingly bad."RELATED - Ben Affleck Lists LA Mansion For Sale After Moving In With JLoAs if that wasn't bad enough, as we'll reveal, it failed to generate anything positive at the box office, despite the star power involved. In addition, we'll take a look at the bold career move J-Lo made after the film.

Ben Affleck Doesn't Regret Gigli Despite How Bad It Was In Reviews And At The Box Office

Off a budget of $75 million, Gigli tanked at the box office, bringing in $7.2 million. The reviews might've been worse, with platforms like IMDb giving the film a 2.6 stars on 10, while Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie a 6% approval rating.

Speaking alongside Cinema Blend, Ben Affleck recalls the film becoming a complete disaster quickly, following its release.

"The funny name, the Jennifer Lopez romance, and overexposure of that, it was kind of a perfect storm. And I remember talking to Marty the Friday it came out and I was like it's just spectacular, it's a tsunami, it couldn't be worse. This is as bad as it gets."

Even with so much bad, there was good to come out of the situation. Yes, it did lead to Bennifer joining forces, however, it would also lead Affleck's career down a different path, into directing.

"If the reaction to Gigli hadn't happened, I probably wouldn't have ultimately decided, "I don't really have any other avenue but to direct movies," which has turned out to be the real love of my professional life.

Affleck continues, "So in those ways, it's a gift. And I did get to meet Jennifer, the relationship with whom has been really meaningful to me in my life."

As for Jennifer Lopez, she underwent similar circumstances behind the scenes.

Jennifer Lopez Thought Her Acting Career Was Over After Gigli

Gigli hurt J-Lo's acting career as well. Following the film, she made a return to television, appearing on a few Will & Grace episodes. Thankfully, the trauma from Gigli was only temporary for J-Lo, whose career would ultimately get back on track.

However, speaking with Just Jared, she had major doubts following the film.

“I lost my sense of self, questioned if I belonged in this business, thought maybe I did suck at everything. And my relationship [with Affleck] self-destructed in front of the entire world. It was a two-year thing for me until I picked myself up again.”

After only a few weeks together, J-Lo would leave CAA and head back to her former agent, Patrick Whitesell, who also repped Ben Affleck at the time.

According to EW, Lopez made some major changes to her team at the time.

"A source close to Lopez tells the Reporter she has nothing against CAA but has reconsidered the job Whitesell had done for her since she signed with Endeavor last October."

"Despite the Endeavor move, she’s not re-hiring Medina as well but will stick with her new managers at The Firm, according to the Reporter," EW wrote at the time.

It all turned out to be just fine as clearly, Lopez's career was able to rebound. We can say the same for Ben Affleck, who went on to enjoy success behind the camera, and in front of it as well with some major roles, including dawning the role of Batman for DC.
