Jennifer Lopez is perhaps the very definition of a multi-hyphenated talent. She has managed to carve out spaces for herself in the music, acting and dancing worlds, and has even recently followed the trend of branching out into the cosmetics industry. Acting has been her focus for the past few years, however, with leading and producing roles in 2018’s Second Act and 2019’s Hustlers.

Now, hot off the heels of her whirlwind reignited summer romance with Ben Affleck, Lopez is set to make a return to the big screen, playing an assassin in an upcoming Netflix project titled The Mother.

The first set photos of JLO getting into character were released yesterday, and they show the mom-of-two dressed in thick, layered clothing and rocking long dark hair while seemingly departing from a plane. Lopez is also set to produce the upcoming movie, which Deadline describes as being about “a deadly female assassin who comes out of hiding to protect the daughter she gave up years before, while on the run from dangerous men.”

Come fans of the "Jenny From The Block" singer are excited to see her flexing her acting chops once again, with one tweeting, “this plot always delivers, excited about this”. Others, however, aren’t so sure about the upcoming movie’s plot synopsis. In fact, many eagle-eyed Twitter users have spotted significant similarities between the description of The Mother and the recently released Karen Gillian flick, Gunpowder Milkshake. The thriller-action movie hit theaters last month to lackluster critical reception and revolved around Gillian’s assassin character reuniting with her mother and figures from her past to save the life of a young child.

One fan of Lopez responded to the new glimpse of her on set by writing, “Gunpowder Milkshake literally came out a few weeks ago and basically had the same plot. Netflix need to stop recycling ideas…” While other Twitter users condemned the upcoming movie as being too formulaic, with the female assassin trope being a common one in Hollywood. One person tweeted sarcastically, “So original” and another wrote, “Wow such an original concept. Can’t wait to see it”, alongside a rolling eye emoji.

However, other Twitter users have noted that The Mother is set to mark the star's first foray into action filmmaking, even if the project is set to tread well-worn ground. And the uncanny similarity to Gunpowder Milkshake may dissipate once more plot details emerge ahead of the movie’s yet unscheduled premiere. We can’t wait to see what JLO has up her sleeve next!
