Jessica Biel has shared a sneak peek of upcoming thriller series Cruel Summer with her followers.

Biel has most recently served as executive producer for Freeform and Hulu upcoming series, tackling a girl’s disappearance in Texas. The actress’s best known roles include her critically acclaimed turn as Cora Tannetti on limited series The Sinner, which she also exec produced.

Jessica Biel Is Executive Producer On Tense Drama ‘Cruel Summer’

Biel has posted a teaser trailer of the upcoming series, adding a birthday cake emoji. If you’re wondering why that is, a look at the trailer should answer your question.

In the teaser, protagonist Jeanette Turner (played by Tell Me Your Secrets actress Chiara Aurelia), is seen celebrating different birthdays over a three-year period.

The series is set in the mid-1990s. Created by Easy A screenwriter Bert V. Royal, Cruel Summer follows the abduction of popular teen Kate Wallis (Olivia Holt). Seemingly unrelated, protagonist Jeanette goes from being a sweet, awkward teen to the most popular girl in town and, by 1995, the most despised person in America.

In the teaser, served by an increasingly creepy Happy Birthday tune, we see Jeanette’s dad Greg (Michael Landes) wake up his smiling daughter on her birthday in 1993. In 1994, it’s someone else who wakes up the protagonist on her special day: a possible boyfriend?

By 1995, things have turned sour. A colder color grading signals that something is up. Jeanette’s father announces “Your lawyer is here,” before wishing his daughter a happy birthday.

"Happy Birthday, Jeanette Turner,” is also the title of the pilot. The series consists of eight episodes, with the first two debuting on April 20 on Freeform and the next day on Hulu.

Biel On Why She Wanted To Be Involved In 'Cruel Summer'

"This is a project that I would have wanted to do if I was their age,” said Biel during a presentation of the series for the TCA last month.

“I would have loved to play one of these characters.”

She added that “to be able to create something for young women…is really exciting.”

“To sit in a space with the younger generation and really give them this platform to really talk about some intense, hard things that these young people are going through is really exciting for me. And it’s something we want to do for all people, but especially for women and for girls,” she continued.

Alongside Aurelia, Hold, and Landes, the cast also features Brooklyn Sudano, Harley Quinn Smith, Froy Gutierrez, Allius Barnes, Blake Lee, and Nathaniel Ashton in regular roles. Grey’s Anatomy star Sarah Drew will also appear in a recurring role, together with Barrett Carnahan, Andrea Anders, Benjamin J. Cain, and Nicole Bilderback.
