Johnny Cash’s name is one that is synonymous with rebellion and country music. The man in black earned 10 platinum albums and several Grammy awards in his lifetime and the story of his life, Walk The Line, starred Hollywood icons Joaquin Phoenix and Resse Witherspoon. It is considered one of the best biopics ever made, winning several awards.

Fans who came to love Cash posthumously might be surprised to learn that in addition to being one of the most popular musicians in American history, he was a capable actor who earned himself a respectable credit’s list before his death in 2003. 15 'Wagon Train' 1959

Cash’s first hit single “I Walk The Line” came out in 1956 and was a sensation. His first album was released in 1957 and by then Cash was an established country music star. By 1959 he was the guest musician on a few shows but his acting debut would come playing Frank Hoag in an episode of the popular western series Wagon Train in an episode titled “The C.L. Harding Story.”

14 'The Deputy' 1961

In the show starring Henry Fonda, father of Peter and Jane Fonda, Cash starred in an episode as Bo Braddock, who comes to Fonda’s character, Clay McCord, the shopkeeper turned lawman, for help.

13 'The Johnny Cash Show' 1969 - 1971

While he played himself more than he did other characters, Cash along with his with June Carter hosted this country themed variety show that featured not only Cash’s talents but the talents of budding country music stars and entertainers. The show also had sketches featuring comedy legends like Bob Hope and Bing Crosby.

12 'The Partridge Family' 1970

In this show that followed the adventures of a family band touring the country, Cash was in an episode where he is simply credited as “Variety Show Host.” Perhaps his time on his variety show helped him get into character.

11 'A Gunfight' 1971

While he did not do many films, Cash did step on to the silver screen a few times. One of his most notable performances was opposite Kirk Douglas in the film A Gunfight. The film is about two aging western stars who stage a gunfight and sell tickets to a duped public.

10 'Columbo' 1974

The classic detective series starring Peter Falk always featurued the title character playing cat and mouse with whoever he knew to be the killer. In an episode titled “Swan Song” Cash played a televangalist turned killer named Tommy Brown.

9 'Little House On The Prarie' 1976

Cash usually appeared in western or pioneer themed shows so it is fitting that he made a cameo appearance in an episode of the most popular pioneer show of the 1970s, Little House on the Prarie. In the series based on the works of Laura Ingles Wilder, Cash played a charcter named Caleb Hodgekiss.

8 'Adrift At Sea' 1983

In this Japanese made film Cash has a small role as John McLoughlin, an American sailor. The film has seen little time in the United States and is an unusual entry in Cash’s acting resume.

7 'Murder In Coweta County' 1983

In this TV movie Cash played Sheriff Lamar Potts, a heroic county lawlman who goes toe to toe with a murderous wealthy land owner, played by Andy Griffith. The movie is an interesting change of pace for Griffth who is usually the one to play the benevolent sheriff.

6 'North and South' 1985

In this mini series about the civil war, Cash appears for six episodes as abolitionist leader John Brown. Cash’s story arc follows the story of how Brown and his men took Harper’s Ferry in an attempt to start a slave rebellion. Brown was later arrested and executed for treason but some today consider him an American hero.

5 'The Wonderful World of Disney' 1988

Western themes are a favorite of Disney's and they have been for decades. In a 1988 episode for this series Cash played American folk legend and coonskin cap wearer Davy Crockett. Crockett was a real person, but his life was the stuff of American folklore.

4 'Doctor Quinn Medicine Woman' 1993-1997

Cash made regular guest appearances on the CBS drama in every season of the show until it’s cancelation in 1997. Cash played Kid Cole the gunslinger who suffers from consumption.

3 'Renegade' 1996

This popular nineties series features an episode with Cash as a man named Henry Travis, just one one of the many passing characters who comes into the life of the motorcycle driving main character and his associates.

2 'The Simpsons' 1997

In an episode where Homer eats hallucinogenic chilli peppers and goes on a vision guest, Cash plays the voice of a talking coyote and Homer’s spirit guide who encourages him to find his soul mate. The episode, "El Viaje Misterioso De Nuestro Homer," is one of the most popular in the show’s history.

1 'The Hunted' 2003

While he was originally uncredited, his final film role before his death was as the narrator in the action-thriller The Hunted, starring Benicio Del Toro and Tommy Lee Jones. Cash died later that same year just weeks after the death of his wife June Carter.
