Johnny Depp fans are hoping for a miracle as he's set to be heard by the Court of Appeal next month. A judge ruled last year that he assaulted his ex-wife Amber Heard and left her "fearing for her life."

It came after Depp sued The Sun newspaper after the paper was called him a "wife beater."

After a three-week trial at the High Court, Mr Justice Nicol found The Sun's claim was "substantially true."

The judge ruled the Pirates of the Caribbean star, 57, assaulted Heard, 34, on a dozen occasions and put her in "fear for her life" three times.

Lawyers for Depp are challenging that ruling, as they claim to have new evidence in his defense.

Following the high-profile trial, Mr Justice Nicol ruled against Depp, but the Oscar-nominee claims he "did not receive a fair trial."

His lawyers also called Justice Nicol's decision "plainly wrong."

In an order issued on Monday, Lord Justice Underhill said Mr Depp's application for permission to appeal should be considered at a hearing.

The date - if possible due to COVID - will fall between "March 15 and 31."

Meanwhile, Depp has accused Heard of pocketing the massive $7m settlement from their divorce and repeatedly lying about giving it to charity.

The Aquaman actress declared that she didn't want Depp's money after their 2016 breakup. Instead the 34-year-old vowed to split the payment between two charities.

But Depp's lawyers say this was merely a "sham" and have spent the past year chasing the Children's Hospital Los Angeles and the American Civil Liberties Union to find out how much they actually received from her.

Depp's lawyers have tried in vain to contact ACLU, but so far they have refused to cooperate.

However documents produced by the Children's Hospital in Los Angeles suggest it only received $100,000 – way short of the promised $3.5m "gift."

Fans of Depp were "hopeful" that Depp will win his appeal.

"Amber has a court history of physical violence against other people- just because she is pretty and blond people think she is incapable of being the violent one ... she is a very nasty piece of work. I'm hopeful this will come out in the appeal," one fan wrote.

"Always believed him," a fan said simply.

"In the press Amber played the victim! I believe she even routed herself as a victim of Domestic Violence . That is a disservice to others who have been honest about their specific domestic violent situations," a third wrote.
