Save The Last Dance premiered 20 years ago, and the movie's stars, Julia Stiles and Sean Patrick Thomas, recently admitted that a sequel to the teen flick could be up in the air.

The movie was released in 2001, and it was one of the first films that had an interracial couple as the two leads. It follows aspiring dancer Sara, a white teenager (played by Stiles), who moves to Chicago and falls in love with Derek, a black teenager (played by Thomas). It was a huge hit, spending two weeks atop the box office and grossing more than $131 million, according to E.

In a Zoom interview, both actors discussed the impact of the interracial romance depicted in the movie, those famous dance scenes, and if they would be down for a possible reunion.

"It would be so special. I would be a lot less nervous," Stiles shared, adding, "I'm envisioning, like, me doing the Debbie Allen character in Fame, where now she's a dance teacher and she's smacking a cane against the ballet bar. And then, I don't know."

Thomas, meanwhile, seemed unsure of what the premise of a sequel would be: "I can never think of something that sounds plausible. Unless they ended up getting married somehow. But that seems too easy. So it's tough for me to kind of wrap my brain around how that would come to pass."

However, he also agreed that if it happened, he would jump at the chance.

"If somebody has a good idea, I'd definitely take a look. I would love to work with Julia again, now. It would be an incredible pleasure because we're grown-ups now."
