In an interview with Chris Willman for Variety's new series, "Soundboard," Keith Urban sat down to talk about life, music, and love.

He began the interview breaking down the creative process behind his newest album "The Speed Of Now Part I," that was released in mid-September. Urban explains, "I recorded over thirty songs, and I was struggling with not including them on this record." For that reason, Urban divided his project into two parts, the second of which will be released at a later time.

As Urban began unpacking the tracks on the album, he spoke about the theme of love. He talked about the opening track "Out The Cage," and how it became a song about "any situation where you feel stuck, whether that's a crap job or an unfulfilled relationship."

Urban also opened up about his family's relationship with intimacy. "We didn't speak about intimate things in our house... There's times I wish I said 'sorry' to someone who drifted out of my life or 'I love you' to someone who had passed away."

The interviewer expounded on the issue, one that artists often face - the struggle of sharing feelings in a song versus real life - to which Urban explained, "it took marrying [Nicole Kidman] to learn how to communicate properly and speak and say things. I could write a good love song, but I was terrible at relationships. I just didn't know. My parents did a great job raising us, but you can't give what you don't have."

As a couple in the spotlight, Urban and Kidman's relationship has definitely garnered national attention at times - though some stories are a little sillier than others.

Five years ago, Kidman appeared on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon and confessed that she had tried to go on a date with Fallon years prior.

After that video went viral with over 55 million views, Kidman appeared on Fallon's show again. During that interview, Fallon was making jokes about their "love story." Little did Fallon know, Urban would surprise them by coming out and playing the guitar during the interview. Kidman did the rest of the interview while sitting on Urban's lap.

That interview alone is enough evidence to say that Kidman has taught Urban how to express love outside of a writing a smash-hit love song - and she's probably reaping the benefits every day.
