Years after her split from Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman has found love again and this time, it looks like it’s forever. The Oscar winner married country musician Keith Urban back in 2006 and the couple has since become parents to daughters Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret (Kidman also has two children with Cruise).RELATED: What Keith Urban And Nicole Kidman Have Said About Lockdown Life With Their FamilyThe celebrity couple also celebrated their 16th wedding anniversary just recently. And while Kidman and Urban seem extremely happy together, few may know that their marriage also comes with a pre-nuptial agreement that others may find bizarre.

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban Had A Whirlwind Romance

Kidman and Urban met by chance back in 2005, while both were attending the G'Day USA gala. There may have been sparks that evening, but nothing happened between them. “I remember thinking, I had such a crush on him, and he wasn't interested in me,” Kidman even told Elle DeGeneres in 2017. “It's true! He didn't call me for four months.”

A year later, the Grammy winner would also confess to snubbing Kidman, although he didn’t mean to. “Somebody had given me her number and I had it in my pocket for a while. I kept looking at it thinking, 'If I call this number, she's going to answer. I don't know what [to] say,’” the singer explained while appearing on the Australian talk show Interview in 2018. “I'd never have thought she’d see anything in a guy like me.” Urban eventually called and the two synced. “It was effortless,” he recalled.

Kidman and Urban married just a year later after Urban’s surprise proposal on Kidman’s 38th birthday. Since then, the couple has had one of the incredible celebrity marriages. However, unbeknownst to many, it took a lot of work to get there. And in some ways, it also took a bold prenup on Kidman’s part.

Nicole Kidman’s Marriage Prenup Required Commitment From Keith

There may have been sparks between Kidman and Urban from the beginning, but there were signs of trouble too. For Urban, it all started when he moved from Australia to Nashville. As he was trying to get into the U.S. music scene, he shared a place with a roommate who had a fondness for cocaine. And that’s when he ended up trying it too. “And then one day he offered me this massive pipe,” Urban recalled. “I’d never had it, it looked good, so I took it. Things didn’t immediately go pear-shaped, but that was the beginning of it.”

From there, things did take a turn for the worse. Urban got high on alcohol and more drugs, including coke and Ecstasy. “I didn’t seem able to stop. There was no stopping this time. I’d go to sleep, wake up a couple of hours later, go at it again, drinking to take the edge off,” he confessed. “I remember thinking, ‘I’m probably not going to make it until tomorrow.’ And then I thought, ‘F*** it. I really don’t care. It’ll be a relief to not have to. I’ll take an Ambien and at some point, I’ll pass.’ I was taking everything. I remember thinking, ‘Oh, good, this is the end of it, yahoo.’ I was quite happy about it.”

Kidman was well aware of Urban’s addiction problems when they got together. And in fact, these issues were even acknowledged in the prenuptial agreement that the singer signed before marrying the actress. According to reports, the agreement states that Urban would get $600,000 for every year that they stay together. However, the cash would reportedly only be released to the singer if he stays away from drugs and keeps his drinking under control.

Keith Urban Credits Nicole Kidman For Keeping Him Sober

Despite the prenup in place though, Urban still couldn’t get his issues under control initially. He had entered rehab twice only to relapse. “I caused the implosion of my fresh marriage,” the singer recalled. But then, Kidman staged an intervention and got Urban to stay in a rehab facility for three months. That’s when Urban finally managed to get sober and he owes it all to his wife. “I was spiritually awoken with her. I use the expression ‘I was born into her,’ and that’s how I feel,” he said. “And for the first time in my life, I could shake off the shackles of addiction.”

And while Urban’s past may be behind him, it still haunts him from time to time. The only difference is he knows how to handle it now. “I still make the odd mistake but not anything like I did in the past — and these days I see them coming before everything implodes,” Urban explained. As for Kidman, despite everything they have been through, she is grateful that they found their way to each other. “That man is the best thing that's ever happened to me,” the actress said.

After 16 years of marriage, Urban is, indeed, a changed man. Aside from being sober, the singer doesn’t even party like he used to. When asked why, Urban simply replied, “I’d like to stay married.”
